After a full month of residencies, we’ve worked our way back around to the first set of artists. In the first week of February, TQD and Jubilee took the decks back and had their second go at their featured mixes. For the second hour, BBC Radio 1 went with an incredibly talented performer that laughs in the face of consistent genres and tears them to shreds.
Instead of trying to define Jubilee’s sound, it’s more useful to describe her influences. She was born in Miami and took to South Florida’s rave scene early on. The city’s mix of different cultures and proximity to the Caribbean yielded a melting pot of potential musical influences that slow cooked Jubilee’s sound. After moving to New York, she expanded her attention to colder areas on both sides of the Atlantic.
Her hour-long residency is as manic as her musical influences (Uncle Luke, Pitbull, Skream, Benga), and is a non-stop hype train. By weaving together dancehall, r&b, rap, and grime, she takes listeners all over the world. The party starts in the Caribbean, heads onto American soil before traveling up the east coast, jumps across the pond and back again. It’s a whirlwind show that keeps listeners’ head spinning. By keeping the audience on their toes, it makes them completely engaged and surprised throughout.
Her ability to touch on so many sounds in the one-hour show is truly amazing and makes for a fantastic listen. Jubilee is setting the bar high for the artists that take over the last half of the Residency.
