This week on Artists of the BBC Radio 1 Residency, we have the pleasure to shine the spotlight on hip-hop extraordinaire, TOKiMONSTA.
The LA based producer’s albums display her desire to find balance in all aspects of sound. On the one hand, TOKiMONSTA’s songs can explore the ethereal and moody feelings of the period of time after the clock strikes midnight (her first album’s name Midnight Menu is a nod to her preference of making music late into the night). On the other hand her most recent album (Lune Rouge released last year) shows that rap songs can have complicated and layered beats and don’t just have to focus on being loud.
Her radio show is evidence of her inclination to shine the light all over the hip-hop landscape. She shows that incredible down-tempo music can hold its own against its more popular cousins and that great songs come from all ends of the Earth. Artists representing the Far East and the Caribbean are given an equal time-share among those from the United States. Furthermore, these worldly rappers are doing their thing over beats ranging from upbeat hip-hop and traditional R&B to tunes resembling rock and jazz.
In the past we’ve had artists that use their time to stretch over many genres. Here, TOKiMONSTA uses her time on one genre. But shows absolutely every aspect of it and uses her version of a megaphone to let us know about all of this incredible talent in the hip-hop world.
