Whats your baby up to these days? Building towers with wood blocks? A sure fire sign he’s the next world famous architect. Throwing that sippy cup like a MLB pitcher? Mixing on Abelton with her sister like Nervo? Didn’t think so. Start em young and sign your little tike up for Baby DJ School if you really want to make something out of their future careers.
Brooklyn native Natalie Elizabeth Weiss started the school to teach kids as young as three months old “the wonderful worlds of electro, hip-hop, and house,” according to her press release. She also says the little ones will use modern DJ equipment to mix and match beats, create samples, and play and handle records.
Weiss gave some advice to vice.com on how babies can use their dj skills to the best of their abilities:
1. “The most important thing about being a DJ is being a selector. If you don’t match one beat, if you don’t run it through one effect, if you don’t drop one well-placed air horn, but you have cool tracks, that’s all you need.” She encouraged parents of baby DJs to “have them be active listeners when they’re selectors,” and offers instructional directions like, “Wow, do you hear that bubbly texture? I feel bubbles in my arms. Do you hear the bubbles? Where are the bubbles in the song?”
2. “Having equipment that they can use easily” is also key. That means a laptop, a soundcard, and a MIDI trigger.
3. “Keep the drinks far away. When adults are having drinks you want to keep the laptop far away, and the same is true with babies. Those sippy cups always spill.”
Received well by parents and toddlers alike, the trial class in mid-September could be a good sign for the future of baby djs around the world. For 200$ a class you might as well throw a cool onsie on the little one, too.
