Washington D.C. is approximately 3,602 miles across the pond from England, but that didn’t stop Badass Raves from bringing an evening of grimy UK Dubstep to U. Street Music Hall for a show that could have easily been mistaken for an old-school London rave. On Sunday, BADASS RAVES, the engineers behind East Coast Halloween hot-spot NIGHTMARE FESTIVAL invited ravers from around the region to dive into the underground with help from CASPA, CHOPPY OPPY, and SKETCHY PETE.
If you haven’t heard of Caspa, we’re going to assume that you haven’t heard much dubstep. The London native is nothing short of an icon within the European and American dub scenes and has been producing his signature brand of grime for the past 20-something years. Inspired by the edgy Jungle style music that ruled the UK electronic scene throughout the ’90s, Caspa began developing his flavor for dub by producing and playing in clubs throughout his hometown of London. Since then, he has churned out three studio albums, four mix compilations, and an extensive catalog of singles while touring the planet from Cape Town to California.
Deep in the depths of U Street’s basement, Sunday’s show was kicked off with a set off by DC-based producer Choppy Oppy. Fractalized live visuals complemented the Choppy Oppy’s style of deeply psychedelic bass music and worked to transform U. Street’s industrialized interior into a melting mass of bass.
The evening came to an end with none other than Sketchy Pete, A DC area native who has a taste for earth-rumbling bass and a talent for closing shows out with a bang. If you’re still riding the Nightmare Fest Wave, check out the completed photo albums and purchase tickets to Badass Raves next event here – we’ll see you on the rail!
