Balkan Bump is the rebranded solo project of ethnomusicologist Will Magid, and he is back with another intricately layered track, “Irfan”. Just this past month he collaborated with heavy hitter Gramatik and Talib Kweli on “Aymo”, a high energy single with heavy influences from a bright horns section, hi-hop rhythms, and rich melodies stemming from his knowledgable background of regional music. He creates a refreshing take on older musical styles and mixing it in with his own.
Bump definitely mixes it up with “Irfan”, with high tempo horns replacing what normally would be synth scales. We get an introduction with hand drumming before the trumpets pop in. He then smoothly drops in that beat and the course is set. Of course, it wouldn’t be fully complete without adding in some electronica elements and a string solo to mirror the horns in the middle to liven things up. Deemed “Future Balkan” on Soundcloud, that is directly where Bump derives his inspiration from. This track is apart of a forthcoming EP, set to release early next year on Gramatik’s label, Lowtemp Records.
