The Bassnectar team outdid themselves yet again at Bass Center 2016 in Commerce City, Colorado. It was fun, loud, and all around a breathtakingly beautiful weekend. Colorado is the ideal location for a festival in the middle of the summer; the weather was perfect throughout the weekend, which made for an ultimate Bassnectar festival extravaganza.
The event began on Friday afternoon with Bass Network-organized parades and meet-ups before the doors opened, which gave festival-goers a chance to hang out and get to know each other. Bass Center pen pals had their own meet-up to attend in which they could meet and make a new friend if they were traveling alone, or if they just wanted someone new to add to their already existing festival group.
The music Friday evening began with Minnesota, who opened his set with “Thunderdome”, a collaboration with G Jones. Minnesota kept the crowd up and moving throughout his set with original tracks such as “Purple Daze”, a crowd favorite. Lupe Fiasco kept the crowd moving after Minnesota, who brought his own hip-hop vibe to the stage. He performed tunes such as “Hip Hop Saved My Life” and “The Show Goes On” that brought that funk that bass heads eat up. The sea of people moved in-sync as Lupe sang to all of us until the end of his time on the stage.
Next up was Flying Lotus, whose incredible visuals and deep bass mesmerized the crowd. He performed his single “Coronus, The Terminator” from his album You’re Dead!.
At this point, the mass of people were sharing an anxious feeling for the upcoming performances of Flux Pavilion and the one and only Bassnectar. Flux Pavilion took the stage as the air began to cool and nerves began to set in.
He introduced himself and began throwing down bangers, such as the second song he played “Bass Cannon” which had the entire Dick’s Sporting Goods Park vibrating and awash in bass. Flux hyped up the crowd, and just in time, for Bassnectar was next.
As Bassnectar walked on stage, all feelings became numb and we remembered why we traveled across the country and gathered in this place together. He stepped behind the table and began playing, opening with his remix of “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. After performing many original tracks, such as “Wildstyle Method” and “Generate”, he brought out Crywolf to perform “Rising”, a tune from Bassnectar’s new album, Unlimited. Crywolf’s beautiful voice serenaded the crowd as Lorin mixed, and the stunning moment lasted long enough to sweep emotion over the entirety of the crowd.
Bassnectar continued playing for the remaining hours of his extended set until the last minutes when he walked off stage. The crowd was silent for a moment, until he walked back on stage and began playing “Vava Voom”. He brought out Lupe Fiasco, and they performed the song together. Lupe jumped around the stage singing and dancing as the audience swayed before him. It was a magical moment and wonderful ending to the first night of Bassnectar’s first festival.
Saturday began with more parades and meet-ups so the attendees could make friends and get to know each other to meet up at next year’s Bass Center. The music Saturday began with a performance by Thriftworks, who always puts on a jaw-dropping show. His upbeat bass continuously makes the crowd want to get up and dance. And after his set, he walked around the crowd and go crazy with the rest of us. We were fortunate to run into him and one of his biggest fans as well.
He was followed by G Jones, who pleased the crowd with his new releases and collaborations. He performed tracks such as “Warrior”, his new release with EPROM, “Krabby Patty Secret Formula”, and more. G Jones is always a crowd favorite when he steps onto the stage, and these ladies performing amongst all of the fans showed it.
After G Jones was AlunaGeorge, who kept the crowd moving with their pop vibe. They played one of their newer singles, “I’m in Control”, and also an oldie but goodie, “You Know You Like It”.
Porter Robinson was up next, and he did not disappoint. He threw down deep heavy bass, and the crowd loved it. He played tracks such as “She Heals Everything”, which put the crowd into a different emotional state and made them feel the music. The audience loved Porter, and he was a crowd favorite. Wu-Tang Clan opened for Bassnectar on Saturday, and they did an excellent job of hyping up the crowd for what was about to go down. The performed lots of old tracks while also throwing in some new tunes to keep the listeners on their feet. After Wu-Tang Clan left the stage, and the lights went out, it was time for magic to take place.
Night two of Bass Center was even more enchanted than the first night. Bassnectar opened with “TKO”, a tune from his new album Unlimited. He also played tunes such as “Ugly”, “Speakerbox” and “Level Up”. Saturday night was filled with bangers and heavy bass, while Friday night was more of a majestic and beautiful setting.
Bassnectar is about providing his audience with noise and beauty, and that is what Bass Center did. This experience was one for the books, and I wouldn’t have changed it for anything.
Bassnectar and his crew know how to put on a show that pleases the crowd to make them want more, and he and all of his support provided their audience with the perfect balance of noise and beauty, which made it a wonderful weekend.
We would like to thank the all of the staff and organizers of Bass Center 2016 for invited us to cover such an incredible weekend. We look forward to Bass Center 2017 next year.
