Electronic music festival goers are notorious for their unique, flamboyant, and vibrant outfits that have become a distinctive part of the scene; however, there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed while trying to put together a memorable festival outfit. Recognizing that the recreational wearing of Native American headdresses is perceived as offensive by Aboriginal peoples, dance music festival, the Bass Coast Project has just announced via Facebook that they will be banning all “feathered war bonnets” from their event:
Put on by A.B.C music, Bass Coast Project takes place between August 1-4, in Merritt, British Columbia on Indigenous land, and brings in a diverse range of electronic artists to represent a wide variety of styles and sub genres. Amongst the scheduled artists is Ottawa-based Aboriginal group, A Tribe Called Red, who commended the festival for their decision:
Although Aboriginal headdresses are seen all too often at dance music festivals, there is the possibility that other events will follow Bass Coast’s example. Thoughts? Comments? Let us know below.
