We’ve had three months now to digest Lorin’s latest album Noise vs. Beauty, and Bass Heads around the country already have staples like “Loco Ono” and “Gnar” forever engrained into their head. From insane bangers like “Lost In The Crowd” to calm melodies like “Ephemeral”, NVSB has proven to cover all the bases when it comes to expressing Bassnectar’s artistic vision. An album of this magnitude screamed for a remix treatment from the start, and yesterday that’s exactly what it got courtesy from a range of talented artists like Jantsen, G Jones, Minnesota and others.
Very much like everything else he does, Bassnectar has veered off the path most traveled when it comes to giving his album a facelift. An artist of his prestige can certainly have his pick of any artist he so chooses, yet Lorin decided to uncover lesser known talent and showcase producers who deserve the spotlight; many of which you may not have been familiar with before. Calling on artists of all genres to remix each track (sometimes more than once), twenty-two songs is a lot to take in. That’s why we’re here. We recommend listening to each and every one to form your own opinion, but below are our standout tracks off the remix album.
Don’t Hate The 808 – Bassnectar ft. Lafa Taylor (G Jones remix)
When I first got wind of the tracklist and saw G Jones on it, this song was instantly the one I was most looking forward to. G Jones is a well known name throughout the Bassnectar community and is beloved for his borderline blasphemous bleeps and weird wobbles. What he does with the chopped up vocals is nothing short of masterful, and the overall slowed down trap tempo is a far cry from the dreaded festival trap that’s plaguing the scene.
Thursty – Bassnectar ft. Craz
Premiered to us all just a few days ago and reviewed through WRR here, we felt it was necessary to include “Thursty” as potentially the best of the bunch. It’s crazy, unleashed Bassnectar at his finest and is one of my favorite productions he’s put out recently. Check out the comment thread of this post in the r/bassnectar subreddit to get a real cool firsthand account from Craz of how the collaboration process went down with Lorin.
Now – Bassnectar ft. Rye Rye (Christian Revelino Remix)
Outside of the dark, dance-y vibes, this remix stands out due to just how different it is from the rest of the tracks on this album. I’d be lying if I said I was aware of who Christian Revelino was before I heard this song, but that’s the beauty of this album. Revelino overhauls the original fan favorite “Now” and turns it into a dark electro/acid track that keeps you on your toes as you trek your way on through all 22 tracks.
Fire – Marz Leon (Bassnectar Remix)
One of the few tracks that isn’t on the NVSB album, this remix done by the Don himself has the classic Bassnectar feel straight through. Using Leon’s weightless lyrics to compliment the insanity which ensues shortly after, Bassnectar injects his unbelievably heavy bass into a song that originally couldn’t be any different.
Heaters – Lafa Taylor (Bassnectar Remix)
Another song that wasn’t on NVSB, this isn’t exactly the sound that Bassnectar is known for but it’s hard to deny the oddly satisfying gangster feeling I get when listening to this. Known around these parts for his contribution on “Don’t Hate The 808”, Lorin uses Lafa Taylor’s lyrics and adds a bit of his patented low-end wobble to it. Trapnectar is known to rear his head in songs such as Freestyle and the Vava Voom remix, so this isn’t completely out of left field.
