Bassheads rejoice; the head-shaman of mystical bass grooves Bassnectar has graced us with the release of side one of the “Immersive Music Mixtape”, named after his upcoming fall “Immersive Music Tour”. Wait, this is side one, you ask? Yes, giving even more reason to celebrate, this 30-minute mix will soon be accompanied by what is going to be equally-incredible side two mix. Bassnectar’s sound has evolved so much over the years, and this mixtape has instantly become a massive favorite of mine. His mixing capatilies, song selection and ability to create his own atmosphere has matured so much, to the point where he now literally take you on a whirlwind-journey through various musical dimensions, leaving you dropping your jaw at how he’s able to use his power of “omnitempo maximalism” at 100% efficiency.
The mix begins with some trap-inspired tunes that he put the Bassnectar spin on, with his remix of Nina Simone and a Paper Diamond track “They Can’t Tell Me Nothing”. What then comes is out of this world; a beautiful piano cover of The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind” transitions into the classic Bassnectar remix of the same track. The hip-hop vibes return with Bassnectar and Excisions recent collaboration “Put It Down” with a rap acapella over it. Then comes Bassnectar and Z-Trip’s remix of Jay Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” where the two combine rock and hip-hop furiously into an fiery, uptempo remix.
The mix continues the rock-feel with a new collaboration between Bassnectar & long-time friend ill.Gates, entitled “Expanded”. I love when these two collab, because their styles go so well together and really send your mind on a trip with odd sounds that yet fit so well. It transitions into a section I would say resembles old-school Bassnectar, with an edit of “Cellular Structure” by Depone, which is then accompanied by some very eerie synthesized vocals repeating “Slow Down, Slow Down…”. (If you were at Camp Bisco, this part, as well most of this mix, should sound very familiar to you.) The rock then enters heavily with a remix of “Limbs” by Agalloch. I really love how Bassnectar has become able to fuse rock, hip-hop and electronica so effortlessly together, and this remix is a perfect testament to that, using the main riffs to lead the song with heavy sub-bass accompanying it. Nectar-hop returns at the end of this mix with an edit of “Liquid Summer” by Diamond Messages, ending with a Bassnectar remix of “Delamure” by Scissorkicks Vs Shut Up And Dance. This is different from Bassnectar’s original “Delamure” song off “Beatfreak Bohemia”. This version has a lot going on, but all blends beautifully together for a great ending to this mix.
But I’ve talked enough. Stop reading and listen right now. Now!
