Aside from the boundary-less music and unmatchable live shows, many of us first fell in love with Bassnectar because of his willingness to challenge the status quo. Lorin challenged the way electronic music is supposed to sound. He challenged the way DJ’ing is supposed to be performed in an era of pre-recorded sets. But lastly, and most importantly, he used his immeasurable platform to challenge listeners to open their eyes and take vested interest in what’s going on in our country.
“This is my 11th year here, I will not be back unless I see some more changes in the party scene with people balancing their right to party with their f*cking responsibility to act and make a difference in this country.”
Bassnectar may have taken his foot slightly off the political pedal (at least publicly) in recent times, but his message remains the same. Many times internet trolls will say something ignorant like “Stick to making music. I don’t come here to be preached to”, which in my mind is the worst attitude someone can have. We should be cheering on an artist who chooses not to waste their platform on 7Up sponsorships, and instead uses it to speak up for something he or she believes in.
Listening to Bassnectar is a twofold experience. On one hand, he creates some of the best music in the industry. What happens next though is something that can’t be said about 99% of the music today; you begin to think. You listen along to the lyrics and your mind starts to churn. It could be about anything. Any issue, any sense of gratitude, any shift in perspective…more artists should explore this route.
Who knows what the current landscape of the industry would look like if instead of posting shirtless vines on FB, popular artists voiced opinions on things that actually mattered.
