He is the maker of impeccably crafted music, a mover and shaker to people on dance floors all over the world, and the resident DJ for one of the wildest parties to possibly ever exist – say hello to Bastian Bux. You’ll know this Spanish DJ and producer from his explosive debut Stay EP on Suara, where he introduced all sounds that make up his music: deep and emotional techno, dark house, and high class electronica. His talents have lead him to become the resident DJ of the infamous Elrow, one of the most important brands in Europe, release on Nicole Moudaber’s imprint Mood Records, and gain support from the industry’s underground powerhouses like Pig & Dan, Christian Smith, Jay Lumen, Carlo Lio, Pan-Pot and Adam Beyer. He recently celebrated his two year journey that’s been filled with laughter, partying, and monumental moments, including the release of two massive EP’s out now, one with Coyu and the other with Lee Van Dowski. In the midst of the madness, we were lucky enough to catch up with Bastian Bux to talk about new music, Elrow, his most memorable moment as a DJ to date, and more.
Thanks so much for talking with us! So, what’s up? What have you been up to lately?
Bastian Bux: Hi guys, happy to speak with you! The last weeks have been exhausting and exciting at the same time. I’ve travelled a lot, I’ve discovered a lot of new places, I’ve had a lot of “flight time” playing which is good to get inspiration and confidence. And I’ve had a lot of fun!
You mentioned on Facebook that as of June, you’ve officially been at it as Bastian Bux for two years now. How has your journey played out so far?
Bastian Bux: I don’t know if it is because I never had a concrete expectation or because it is 100% real, but it feels like this journey couldn’t have been any better. I’ve been experiencing amazing situations from the very beginning, growing up slowly but unstoppably. Sometimes I ask to myself: will this get stuck and stop today? But every day the answer is: No. You can keep growing up if you keep creating.
What has been the most special moment for you over the past two years?
Bastian Bux: I think that my most special moment to day was playing at Space Ibiza and seeing my friends dancing in the middle of the same dancefloor where we partied at ten years before, when they heard me dreaming 24/7 about how amazing would be to, someday, be able to be there, up in the booth.
How does it feel to have released your first original EP with Coyu, SERENDIB, and what was it like working with him?
Bastian Bux: I love to work with Coyu in the studio because he has always a super clear idea of what he wants, what he likes and what he doesn’t… And I’m kind of the opposite, quite doubtful in terms of decisions.
Any funny or absurd moments go down in the studio that you can share with us?
Bastian Bux : Hahaha, there’s a lot! But I fear that most of them are stupid situations that have no sense when you try to explain them out of the context. Even if they still make you laugh out loud when you remember them, they don’t sound that funny when you explain them to other people.
We’ve heard you’ve got some new music in the works out on Digweed’s Bedrock label? What can you tell us about this?
Bastian Bux: I can tell you that it’s true! It is a collaboration between me and Lee Van Dowski, who I admire a lot. It will contain three original tracks, and I love this EP because there’s an unintentional story behind the songs. To think that they’re gonna be released on Bedrock, which has always been a huge goal for me, is more than a dream come true.
What would be your dream label to release on?
Bastian Bux: Ooof, I have a lot in mind! But if I have to chose just one… Kompakt, probably.
Now, let’s talk about Elrow! How did you become the Resident DJ, and what’s it like playing all of their insane parties?
Bastian Bux: I became Resident DJ because they started to grow internationally almost at the same time that I started to get some recognition as a new artist. They were searching for new residents and my manager offered my profile as a candidate. That gave me an opportunity and they liked what they heard. It’s been almost two years now… And I can tell you that I still can’t believe how important and exciting it is to have the opportunity to live, grow and breathe the experiences of being part of this phenomenon.
Do you have a favorite, craziest, or most memorable Elrow show you’ve played?
Bastian Bux: I have many. The first Row we did in Moscow was amazing and super funny. Also, the recent experience at Hideout Festival in Croatia were one of the fuuniest weeks I’ve ever lived. Shanghai was full of great moments too… I don’t know, with Elrow’s crew it is impossible to not have crazy moments while on tour.
You’ve played at one of our favorite clubs in the whole world, Space Ibiza. Although we couldn’t be there, we were most definitely home watching the live stream, crying. What was it like to play Space’s Closing Fiesta?
Bux Bastian: I can’t explain it with words. Even though I had a short set time in the Main Room that night, it felt like being part of an historical moment. The energy of the people was something that I’ll never forget.
If we had a crystal in front of us, what would it tell us about your future plans?
Bastian Bux: Hahaha , I love this one! You know what? I think that it wouldn’t tell you too much. I force myself to not make many long term plans, and try to focus into the next few weeks instead. If you get your head focused into what you are doing and living now, into the steps you have to take now, you’ll get yourself somewhere surrounded by interesting opportunities in this place called future that I strongly believe that we all create in the present.
