Just a little more than a month until two of the best fan-bases in electronic music gather in Hampton, VA for the yearly music convention known as Basslights. The hype is already swirling as fans book hotels, plan outfits, and talk about how many times they’re going to eat at the Waffle House. Of course most of the attention is on the two big names who will be taking the stage: Pretty Lights and Bassnectar. There’s no doubt the two headliners are going to Keep em Bouncin’ and turn the place Upside Down, so we thought some attention should be turned towards one of the openers who also happen to be one of most unique acts in electronic music, Beats Antique.
Fresh off the Creature Carnival tour David Satori, Zoe Jakes, and Tommy Cappell are the collaborative effort that comprises Beats Antique. David is a lifelong musician and handles the electronic aspects as well as the violin, Turkish guitar, and other percussion in their live performances. Tommy Cappel is the son of two music teachers who supplies the beats via the drums. Zoe is the eye catching super talented dancer who boasts 10 years of jazz and ballet experience. These musicians are each extremely talented and their laundry list of accomplishments is a mile long so if you want more information on their background check out their Wiki page here.
Besides their live performance which is one of a kind, my favorite aspect of Beats is their distinctive sound. In electronic music you hear so many complaints that a set is at the same BPM or all of the songs on an artist’s album sound the same which could not be further from the truth when it comes to Beats Antique. Their music is described as “Ethnotronica” and “Tribal Fusion” which I can’t say applies to many other acts within our scene. They use a slew of instruments when recording their songs and bring a bunch out when they play live.
Last year our crew missed some Menert and Keys N’ Krates because we didn’t place as much importance on seeing the openers as we did on PL and Nectar. This will certainly not be the case concerning Basslights this year because of acts like Beats Antique. So wrap up your pregames early, tell the girls to be ready a half hour before they actually need to be, and make it to Beats Antique. If you don’t I promise you’ll regret it.
