Was music always a passion for you growing up?
A song is similar to a picture; it can bring you back to a point in time with just the melody. Music has a strong emotional attachment to periods of my life. I can hear a song from 2004 and it’ll bring me back to what I was doing during and how I was feeling during that time. I’m very proud to have found a career in this industry because I know how important music is for people.
What were some of your first steps that led to the involvement of music business?
All throughout high school I threw parties. I attended 4 different high schools so I was well connected in different cities. When I would throw parties people from all over would attend and I was well known for it. As time went on, I started to throw mini raves and warehouse parties. My mentors would refer books to me and one book that I started reading a book called “Think and Grow Rich”. It changed my way of life from that day forward. My mentality changed and I realized that I should start hosting club events with the goal to work into festivals.
Well during my time of hosting events, I came across some artists that I wanted to manage to have them perform at all my events and build their brand through my brand. As time passed I started to gain a strong passion for management and I began taking it on full time and building up my roster. Now my roster consists of international acts performing at festivals across the nation and I couldn’t be more proud of it. We have a lot more planned for 2019.
How did you fall into dance music and eventually into event-related work?
My best friend went to edc Orlando 2012 and was talking so highly of it. He showed me “language” by porter Robinson and I was very interested from then on. I attended edc Orlando 2013 and from then on I was hooked. The message dance music had during that time was something special that I wish we saw more of now. At that time, I realized this was an industry I needed to be apart of in some way.
I found that people who had more friends and positive Interactions and happy relationships lived much longer than those who didn’t. I decided a life in events and festivals would not only create a life of consistent relationships with my team and our attendee’s but it was also something that I feel can make a strong impact in others lives. An event done right can be just as impactful as the biggest festival.
What are points of insights you think DJ/producers should know about the world of event production and getting booked?
Produce your own sound. A dj can only go so far without his own sound. You need to create value for yourself. Unfortunately, venues don’t care to pay anyone because they don’t see the need if someone else is willing to do it for free and they are playing the same popular tunes you download off SoundCloud. What will ensure that you get booked is having a sound that creates fans and fans mean attendance which is all the club wants.
Networking is also just as important. In the music industry is about who you know and I would say that’s easily just as important as your sound.
Me personally, I love helping the guys I see that work hard. There’s a look some people have that show they’re willing to put in the work. They have strong work ethic and remain humble. I’ve noticed a lot of locals let their ego get the best of them and no matter how great they are, I’m not interested in working with those kinds of people.
What would make the Edm industry better?
I feel the industry needs to find a way back to its roots. In my company, we value collaboration over competition. There’s enough for everyone to eat. I see a huge opportunity for people to band together and make even better experiences. Imagine the top event companies in your area collaborating on one major event once a month. It would change the game for everyone.
What are your favorite artist and festivals in 2018?
Porter Robinson, What so Not, Kaskade, 4B, Fisher, Acraze, VRG, Rated R, Nitti Gritti, Said the Sky, are a few of the guys who did really great in 2018.
Okeechobee was a festival I loved and it’s unfortunate they won’t be back in 2019.
Electric forest and Edc Las Vegas are always on the top of my list. The one that takes the cake for 2018 is definitely Hulaween. I’ll definitely be in attendance in 2019. Burning man will be on my list for this year as well.
