If you haven’t heard Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” yet, you must be living under a rock. The bluegrass-inspired hit has become the fastest selling track in the U.K., as well as #1 in 65 countries. In spite of its initial rejection from EDM fans, the rest of the world has taken quite a liking to the inspirational jam. So of course, fans have taken over the airwaves to showcase their own talent and style into the track. Here are some of our favorite covers of Avicii’s “Wake Me Up”:
1) The Kazoo Clappers
These guys get the number one spot for one particular reason: they’ve got a kazoo. I don’t even think the guy clapping out the beat and buzzing into the kazoo was supposed to be the main part of the act, but for me, it really set them apart from the rest of the covers. And I loved it when they nonchalantly toasted their glasses of water afterwards.
2) The Emotional Violin
This violin cover is both creative and full of emotion. Make sure you watch until the “climax” of the song, when he really starts getting down. Plus, his violin skills are absolutely incredible.
3) Youngster Jam-Band
These guys are so freakin adorable, as well as talented. I like how they’ve changed the progression of the way that the lyrics are sung. They begin the song by single-strumming the guitar, then add another guitar as well as a bongo to compliment their sound.
4) Van Halen Jr.
A more electric spin of the acoustic track, watch until at least a minute in when he starts rippin’ the chords. He tears up a sweet little electric guitar solo, while his friend plays the drums in the background.
5) The Asian Tim McGraw
This guy surprised me in just about every way possible. For a video that had under 10,000 views, I figured it was going to be pretty mediocre. Also, he’s British, has got a killer voice with a country twang, and the best male vocalist that we’ve featured here.
6) Avicii’s Long Lost Twin
What really drew me in was this guy’s voice, and I love how he adapted the song to his own style. Also, his resemblance to Avicii is absolutely uncanny. A long lost brother perhaps?
7) EDM Cello
The following is a cello cover, and the only cover that even sounds remotely close to electronic music. He cuts those cello chords like he’s been doing it all his life, and paired with his strong voice this remix cover is practically unstoppable.
8) The Girl-Next-Door
Most of the covers on the web have a country sound to it, but I’d have to say this is the best one I’ve found. An incredible female vocalist over an acoustic guitar and keyboard. They took the keyboard solo about an octave higher, which gives the track a summery, care-free feel to it.
8) Contemporary & Cool
For this one, they took to a more contemporary feel for it. They slow down the piano while overlaying heart-wrenching vocals. The way that they’ve remastered this track almost makes it sound like a completely different tune.
10) The Bad-Ass
A drum cover of the bluegrass hit. The best part about this video is this guy is drumming to a fairly slow song, and still manages to look intimidating.
