Last week, The Widdler and Levitation Jones brought their highly anticipated Dark Matter tour down to Zydeco in Birmingham, AL. The night began with a set from Birmingham’s very own Chase Clark, or better known to his fans as “Chark.” He started the night off with a bang, playing original tracks that hyped up the crowd and prepared them for the night ahead of futuristic, dark bass music from none other than Levitation Jones and The Widdler.
Levitation Jones took the stage after Chark, beginning with low-tempo, deep dubstep. About halfway through his set he seized the microphone and asked the crowd to request songs they’d like to hear. He then began to play more upbeat music, building up the crowd’s energy. He ended his set with some filthy drops, which is not unexpected when attending a Levitation Jones show. I couldn’t stop dancing the entire time, I can’t wait for the next time he comes to my hometown!
Next up was The Widdler, who began mesmerizing the crowd the moment his set started with his captivating dub sounds. The crowd never lost interest through the entirety of his set because he’s constantly switching it up, and you could tell by the energy flowing through the sea of people in the room. With the release of his new EP with Akcept just a few months ago, there’s one thing this set was not missing- new music. Roots Dub and Diamond Dub are some of my personal favorites, but The Widdler always throws in some tracks the crowd can’t identify. That’s why his sets are so intimate and raw; he keeps you guessing.
The multitude of people who showed up to Zydeco for this show is just a preview for what the growing Birmingham scene has in store. It is very visibly growing and will continue to grow in the future.
