There are labels popping up left and right focusing on everything chill, from trap to house, these days. An explosion of art that is awesome to see, but can also discourage average producers from lashing out and trying new things; instead spending time trying to fit into a segment that is gaining major traction.
bitbird fills the vacuum stagnation has created, unleashing a steady stream of new music that’s carved out a fresh new segment within the chill trend and topped it off with Gouldian Finch #01.
We’ve been getting bits and pieces of Gouldian Finch #01 via new a San Holo’s “Still Looking” release, The Nicholas’s “Pocket”, and a few others, but the compilation significantly sets itself apart and them some. bitbird seems to go for a different approach with A&R by taking more risk in what they release and pushing the limits in regard to what people expect from chill labels in 2016. Finding a balance of something relevant but different is easier said than done. Yet, dozens of energetic and highly ambient genres and styles can be identified and dissected in Gouldian Finch #01. Many tracks have multiple genres within them, some have happy hardcore / hardstyle moments, some are something similar to what you hear on NPR in the afternoon – but it all fits and creates it’s own separate world that you can identify with.
This compilation excites me but the set of DJ/producers it will influence is just as exciting.
