Bone chilling, goose bump inducing music are the first words that come to mind when you listen to Black Tiger Sex Machine’s debut 12 track album released on their very own, Kannibalen Records. Titled Welcome To Our Church, which incorporates a multitude of sounds ranging from dubstep, drum and bass, trap, hip hop and more tells a story of an apocalyptic world taken over by the Kannibalen Virus.
Multitude of sounds aside, the true beauty of this album is BTSM’s ability to use nothing but music and seamlessly connect the songs together to build a story that resembles reading a book; one chapter flowing into the next. A book, which no matter how hard you try, is a struggle to put down.
Track one, “The Virus”, is a quick one-minute intro with orchestral and electronic shifts sets the tone with what can only be an ominous foreshadowing of the story told in the rest of the album.
The transition from The Virus, to “Broadside” is the perfect example of BTSM’s ability to seamlessly stream the tracks together. Play close enough attention and you’ll notice the change otherwise you’re turning the page of this “book” to pick up where the sentence dropped off. What starts off with a hymnal sound, just as if you’ve stepped into their Church, mixes into their classic dubstep and hard-hitting bass.
As each track passes new sounds are introduced into this robust album. “Crazies” ft. Husser throws in trap and hip-hop when you’ve least expected it creating another sound to wrap your mind around.
Feel like dancing? BTSM’s hit “Numbers” that’s accumulated over 500 thousand streams truly channels their festival style while still keeping with the dark apocalyptic theme.
BTSM and Apashe’s “Swing High” makes the top of my list. Completely unexpected the track starts out with a jazzy, Gatsby feel even incorporating trumpets and pure swing music while also keeping the electronic foundation and tone of the rest of the album. This one will surely create that “oh shit!” response.
As the story comes to an end and just when I thought they might slow it down with “Break” I’m surprised and enraptured back in with the slow build up’s steep drop into more dubstep and bass with a quick side of metal thrown in, but its BTSM’s last track The church that brings this story full circle. Picking up sounds used in the intro you know you’ve reached the last chapter leaving you to crave a sequel.
On top of their notable hard work BTSM is headlining in cities across the US and Canada. Listen to their full story and complete the journey with what could only be a euphoric sensory overload, event at one of their 50-date stops.
