Bonnie X Clyde have made their own genre for themselves inside the EDM world with their coined “vocal bass”. We’ve been keeping up with their special mix of powerful vocals from the girl behind Bonnie, Paige Lopynski, and the excellent dub and trap mixing skills by Clyde, aka Daniel Litman. The two longtime friends now powerhouse duo have hooked fans with favorite singles “Bass Jam” and “Torn”. This past weekend we got the chance to see them rock it out live at the Ponce de Leon stage at Shaky Beats down in Atlanta. Check out what Daniel and Paige had to say about their new music, their favorite drinks, vocal bass, and more.
RR: Welcome to Atlanta! You guys threw down earlier today, how did it feel, how was the crowd?
Bonnie: Amazing, honestly. We’ve played in Atlanta before, the crowd here is just always so incredible. Even if we don’t play the hype stuff, you can feel the love from Atlanta here. Every time we come to play. It was crazy, today was one of the first shows I got sick the night before. So approaching today I didn’t feel the best. But as soon as I hopped on stage, I just lost that feeling. I just love Atlanta, the crowd is so amazing. They were singing “Bass Jam”, our song, and I just died inside. It was incredible for me.
RR: So I noticed some psy trance, if I’m not mistaken. Will this be a more often occurrence in your sets or something you may look into producing?
Clyde: I mean, I would love to make it but I don’t know if that will be something we will be doing next. I love playing it.
Bonnie: We’re fans of psy trance when it’s in specific moments.
Clyde: Yeah, specific songs, specific moments.
Bonnie: We’ll feel like, ‘Oh my god, this we have to play out’ and the whole crowd will go nuts. With us making it, probably not any time soon. But we’re always down to play it.
Clyde: Vini Vici, hit me up, I’m down. If they hit us up, that’s the psy trance collab right there.
RR: So how much of the new EP got to come out today? I caught two new tracks in the set. We got to hear “The Unknown”. What was the second one?
Clyde: We played three. About 40% of the new EP haha. The second one was “All For You”.
Bonnie: Yeah, we have five songs total.
RR: Well we’re really excited to catch the rest! How was the meet and greet? I heard you make it a point to have these whenever you can.
Bonnie: We really love meeting the fans, especially after the set when they’re all hyped. Our adrenline is still kicking in for us. Today, he was just like, ‘Why don’t we just bring everybody over to the merch booth after the set and take pics, do a meet and greet there?’
Clyde: Walk ‘em, walk all the kids haha.
Bonnie: Yeah, I didn’t expect so many people to walk over to meet us. It’s always really special meeting them. I remember being in that position, meeting my idol or whatever. It’s so special they care about me. So we make sure that they feel really special. That’s why we have roses, they have really started being our thing, because I saw what that meant to them. It’s a special token they can take home with them.
RR: So do you have any special memories from the meet and greets that you have done?
Bonnie: One of my favorite meet and greets was when we did ‘Breakfast with Bonnie X Clyde’, where we had breakfast. It was my favorite because a couple of the guys showed up in bacon suits. It was funny, really cute. I want to do a couple more of those.
RR: You guys are always down to party, what is your favorite drink?
Bonnie: My go to because I’m a wuss is cranberry and vodka.
RR: I personally like a little red bull and vodka myself.
Bonnie: I’m a really hyper person, so when it comes to anything like that I can’t do it. I definitely prefer things that will chill me out, haha.
Clyde: Ciroc Peach with water.
Bonnie: He LOVES Ciroc Peach.
Clyde: Everything else is just, I don’t know, makes me sick.
Bonnie: Ciroc Peach for me was what made me puke in college. So I just can’t do it.
RR: Any favorite party games?
Bonnie: Actually, one of my favorite party games that I haven’t played in forever is flip cup! When you have a solid group, you’re all into it, best game ever.
Clyde: I’m a cheater. I don’t like beer.
RR: Any favorite places in Atlanta?
Clyde: Opera, we played there in August and we hope to play there again.
Bonnie: Yeah, we can’t wait to play there again.
RR: So you just released your new single “The Unknown”. The inspiration behind this is to not fear it, to take it in stride and push for what you want. This is leading up to your new EP “While We’re Young”. Does this EP continue this inspirational vibe or how does it differ?
Bonnie: Totally, this song is actually the perfect precursor to it. Every song in the EP just makes you feel young and makes you want to go for it. In every song you get a little bit of that. You get a little bit of fun, you know.
Clyde: Makes you want to go for it.
Bonnie: That’s our biggest thing, to let people know that if they really, truly push for something and give it their all, they can do it. That’s really the whole point of this EP, don’t fear the unknown. You can’t fear the unknown.
RR: Will you be keeping the “vocal bass” genre that you two have in a way pioneered or will we be hearing something different?
Clyde: Yes!
Bonnie: We’re sticking to vocal bass. We actually hope to create more of when people hear vocal bass they think of us.
Clyde: Or the certain sound or thing that is us.
Bonnie: Yeah, definitely in all of our music we call it vocal bass. The next EP we’re definitely trying to point it more in that direction and have people that when they hear it they think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s vocal bass.’
Clyde: And the drops have vocal incorporation.
Bonnie: We do a lot of vocal trapping and vocal manipulating.
RR: How do you think you’ve been able to grow with your voice from the beginning of BxC to now?
Bonnie: It’s super funny, I actually talked about this a lot. But the more that time goes on, the more my vocals change. I also learn more about myself, what works, what doesn’t. I always think it’s really awesome when you find a vocalist that not only has a good voice but can sing a song to where their voice is shown the best. That’s the struggle for me. I can write a really good song but is this going to be performing with my voice at my best, will they be able to hear me at my best. As time goes on, I’m really starting to understand myself. I hope that people see that in this EP because I already sound so different since “Bass Jam” and our last EP’s songs. My voice is maturing and definitely getting more into my alto.
Clyde: She’s becoming a woman! Haha.
Bonnie: I really love exploring my range now. I definitely have it in “Bass Jam” and other songs. But I’m excited to what people hear what I sound like now because I’m personally a lot more confident in myself.
RR: Being in the industry for a few years now, what is your perspective of being a female? As a duo?
Bonnie: So, it started off right at three years ago where females weren’t as hot. That was cool with me honestly. I liked being able to come into this industry and not necessarily being seen as a female. Where it’s like, ‘Okay cool, it’s this new act’. Where as now, and don’t get me wrong, I’m a woman and love the fact that women are getting all this heat right now, people are loving them. But I definitely think sometimes now, just because the artist is a girl people are ‘Wow, that’s really dope’, when I wish it was more about if they are dope because they’re dope rather than just because she’s a girl. That’s the only thing that bugs me, aside from that it’s great. I think it’s more important to focus on someone who is talented rather than because they’re female. Obviously, it’s a rare thing to be in this industry but I think the females DJ’s are talking less about “Oh I’m a female” and more of “I’m an artist”. I just like being an artist and seeing eye to eye with everybody.
Bonnie: With being a duo, I think with everything in life you win some and you lose some. Being in a duo is probably one of the most special things because you get to share everything with somebody, which is incredible. I just love that, always having a partner and being able to go off things and then put it together. But obviously you will still have those moments where it’s ‘Like damn I love this and they don’t’ or I want to play this and you don’t. I honestly think it’s only made us better and for the rest for our lives while we do this will make us better. It’s just harder. People think that you have someone to lean on but when you’re by yourself, you really have control over everything. When you have somebody else you really have to understand how to work with people and that’s so important. Learning how to work with other people is huge.
RR: Any upcoming shows or festivals you want your fans to know about?
Clyde: Sunset Music Festival, Das Energi, Electric Zoo, coming back to Altanta, and Space Miami is coming!
