What started as a joke between Botnek and 3LAU has evolved into what is sure to be the next “big room” banger, “Vikings.” In a description on the track’s SoundCloud page, Justin Blau, commonly known as 3LAU, recounts a conversation he had with Gordon and Erick of Botnek about the “musically unoriginal” nature of “big room” house. In an attempt to defy this pattern, the trio produced a track that combines 3LAU’s chords and build with Botnek’s signature drop. What resulted was dubbed “Vikings,” a track which has since seen widespread support by artists including Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Zedd, Tiesto and more.
True to “big room” form, the track begins with a progressive build before blasting into a massive drop. What’s distinctive here is the nature of the drop, which is made up of a highly chaotic and unorganized drum beat, different from anything you’ve heard before. We’re not completely sure if Botnek and 3LAU accomplished what they set out for, but it’s clear that “Vikings” has all the makings of a hit.
