A few weeks ago, RaverRafting got hooked up with an interview with the young producing duo Bougenvilla. These gents are relatively new in the scene, but you wouldn’t notice that with their quality of music. They produced some massive tracks last year with singles such as ‘Take It Back’ and ‘Kaya’ recognizable for their powerful energy.
This past Friday, their newest collaboration with Curbi “Butterfly Effect” was released, showcasing something intense and deep. It contains some dark and strong beats with danceable tunes and variating genres combined. It shows the strength of the combination of both parties and the track is available now via Spinnin’ Records. Read more about the guys’ experiences, past and future plans in our exclusive interview.
In short, how do you guys know each other?
Jeremy: It started a long time ago when jumpstyle was a hype. There was this online forum where live chats were also possible. I went there with a friend of mine and Shefida was there as well. Somehow we got to talking with each other.
Shefida: That’s already seven years ago.
Was that the moment you started producing together?
Jeremy: At first we worked separately, but then we started sending our music to each other. We liked working that way and from that moment on, we started working together more often.
How would you describe your music?
Shefida: Most of all: energetic. That’s what we aim for. A piece of originality, whipping, it’s house music.
What kind of music do you like? Is that what you produce yourselves as well?
Jeremy: My taste of music is very diverse. It varies from classical music to hiphop, modern hiphop, older hiphop, jazz, blues, everything basically.
Shefida: Most of the time, when I get out of my comfort zone, I listen to well-known tracks of different artists, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, that kind of stuff.
Jeremy: That’s great stuff to listen to, indeed.
Shefida: But most of the time, something famous. I don’t know many small underground names, or something like that.
Do you guys have favorite artists?
Shefida: Before we really got into music ourselves, we found Chocolate Puma very interesting. We love how they produce their music and we always admired the energy in their tracks. We used to look up to Tiësto and Afrojack.
Jeremy: We also think many producers behind the scenes of the pop industry are really great.
Can you both express yourselves in your music? How is the cooperation working out, based on that? Shefida: Yes, we definitely can express ourselves in our music. We used to produce everything together. He pressed a button, I pressed one and so on. At one moment, Jeremy started to focus on music and I started doing everything outdoor, so performing, the branding, etcetera. This way, we found our best way of working. We used to work a whole month on one track. Now we just keep it running.
Jeremy: He loves to perform and I love to produce. Producing music together works fine, we do that too sometimes, but it’s a good thing that we discovered what we’re good at.
How long did it take, before you realized the working method that worked out best for you guys?
Jeremy: When we started producing for real, it all went pretty fast.
Shefida: This started around September, last year. We always knew we were able to produce music but our problem was that we took too much time for our tracks. So we didn’t want to put them out there yet. We wanted to wait ‘till we figured that all out. When we started sending our music out there, it got picked up and it worked out pretty fast for us.
Jeremy: The time period between the moment we heard Spinnin’ was interested and the moment we signed, was really short.
What was your moment of breakthrough?
Shefida: The moment we signed with Spinnin’ Records was definitely a milestone, but the real moment was a track we made that got picked up by the public. That was the moment we started to get more followers, 200 plays per 3 months went to 200 plays per hour and that went very fast. It was very motivating for us and from that moment on we also got more and more remix requests. We made a remix for Housequake and Don Diablo and also Spinnin’ picked it up. That’s how everything came together.
What was the most awesome location you guys performed so far?
Shefida: We actually just talked about that in the car when we were driving here. That must have been Laundry Day in Belgium, last September. There were 56000 people watching us and it was really amazing. Those people really know how to go nuts! It’s a great memory for us.
What makes you guys fit together?
Shefida: I think we can improve each other’s weak points. If he’s not good at something, most of the time I am and it works the other way around.
Jeremy: This interview is a good example. He can express himself much better with words.
Shefida: Producing music takes too much time for me, Jeremy does that a lot faster and he can also improve me really well with my English grammar. Those are aspects that make us a good team.
Do you guys have a location in mind where you would really like to perform someday?
Shefida: Amsterdam Arena. We performed in ‘De Kuip’, a big stadium in Rotterdam, last summer and we think stadiums are really awesome to perform.
