In the contemporary American Zeitgeist, Few things are more certain than decisive politics, fear of Covid 19, and money insecurity. Zeitgeist is a word that comes straight from German — zeit means “time” and geist means spirit, and the “spirit of the time” is what’s going on culturally, religiously, or intellectually during a certain period. So, what else influences our collective ‘Geist’ during this ‘Zeit’?
Historically the Danes have been known as conquerors, greatly shaping the English language through ruthless crusades, only to then settle down and intermingle with those living on the lands. Everything from the words Anger and Slaughter, to the very names of our week (Thursday meaning literally Thor’s day), comes from this intermingling. This cultural exchange continues on to even today.
Much like Egill Skallagrímsson, the renowned berserker, who oddly enough is known much more for his poetry than his brutal treatment of any who slighted him, Danish producers Boye & Sigvardt arrive. Taking the Chicago House Style to new heights, they, with the talented Canadian singer Kiesza, create a song about letting go and living in the moment.
The song starts with a solo vocal loop effect, quickly evolving into a vocal piano combo. Not long after a deep house bassline comes in with some hats. Then the track ramps on to full house mode with the hook “you give me the feelings that I do.” Synth brass plays on top of the house beat and everything is given a fair amount of swing. This song is truly meant to be a fun dance escape and it certainly achieves that.
Egill, when in prison to be executed for killing the king’s sons, Wrote a poem so beautiful that the king spared his life. Part of us can’t help but wonder, what prison are Boye & Sigvardt attempting to escape from? Perhaps we may never know, but for now, we can escape with them.
