With festival season in full swing, it’s the best time of the year to find new music that piques one’s interest, or to revisit old favorites. Since Camp Bisco is right around the corner, it’s time for another artist spotlight. Coming straight out of Brooklyn, Break Science is composed of Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee and have been on Pretty Lights Music almost since their inception. And for the Jamheads out there who recognize the name, Adam also performs as the drummer of Lettuce.
The seven-member group plays music described as “psychedelicized soul anthems” and “relentless groove” and can be found spreading the good musical vibes at festivals from the upcoming All Good Music Fest to Electric Forest, which is going on as I type. Last week, we had the great pleasure of talking with Adam Deitch about quite a variety of topics, among them, Bonnaroo, what influenced him to begin making music as well as upcoming projects Break Science has in the works.
Influences/Personal Taste
During our interview, we asked Adam what was the biggest genre in his young life as well as his favorite song to get active to. “Growing up in New York, I was always into hip-hop, especially the production side. And if I had to say, It would be Get On Up by James Brown. It was the only way my mom could get me up in the morning”. We then inquired what it was like to play for two groups, sometimes at the same venue, as was the case during Bonnaroo. In responding, Adam mentioned that it’s a really “organic” process getting adjusted and the presence of his fellow bandmates often helps get things rolling. When we asked what he had lined up for when he listened to music, he said ” my music player has alot of different stuff, but Michael Menert, Organic Funk, James Brown and Chartreuse come to mind. Alongside everything from calypso reggae to classical music and everything of African origin, too. I love it all”. When it comes to studio work, what’s it like to work with Michael Menert? ” Well for starters, Menert is a brilliant producer. He loves funk and hip hop and our shared musical tastes really help give our work together great synergy.”
Live Performance
Moving on to performing live, we asked Adam what was his favorite performance of the year so far. “That would have to be the Superjam at Bonnaroo. We (Lettuce) got to play with RZA, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Redman,Earl Sweatshirt, Solange, Chad Hugo of The Neptunes and Schoolboy Q. It was incredible being able to perform hip-hop and integrate Lettuce’s brass sounds with so many other awesome musicians.” Speaking of his favorite people to share a bill with, Adam said “It’s always great playing with Conspirator, Big Gigantic, STS9 and of course, Derek. We are all good friends so when the music starts flowing, it really becomes something special. I always enjoy playing for both Break Science and Lettuce, it’s awesome to hear the electronic and funk come together in new ways”. Next we asked how a live EDM drummer keep the fluidity and improvisation that makes live drumming so awe-inspiring and great to listen to? “Well the great part about that is I programmed all the sounds for the boards, so that involved me making sure the drum samples were all readily available in our programs. It makes the live music feel natural as opposed to synthetic”.
Notable Upcoming Releases
As anybody would surely ask when they get the chance to chat with one of their favorite performers, we were giddy to ask what might be on the horizon for Break Science. The answer Adam gave us was even more exciting than we would have thought. Combining Break Science’s love of hip-hop, they are collaborating with Redman on a upcoming song called “Who Got It”. Even without hearing the song, one needs to only ponder both artists to realize this song is gonna be ripe with lyricism and awesome instrumentals. What It’s All About
This might be the shortest section on here, but I thought this sentiment was the most refreshing; “Growing up, producing beats was my passion, and it all came down to the mutual soul of hip hop and funk. And thats what my music is about, bridging the gap between hip hop, funk and soul” Adam said. No surprise that such good vibes are coming from the Pretty Lights Music family.
Recent Music and Appearances
Collaborating with PLM producer and artist extraordinaire Michal Menert, Break Science released the Twilight Frequency EP. Comprised of 5 songs, this EP, which can be listened to below, is packed with tunes that are awesome to listen to again and again. And as their page on Royal Family Records says best “Our music is layered with different frequencies and sonic textures so it becomes something you can listen to multiple times and STILL hear new elements you might have missed the first time.”
