Breathe Carolina have returned to the spotlight with their latest LP, Dead, a project that further explores their fusion between punk rock and electronic as well as going back to their roots with David’s voice shining throughout the ten tracks. While they have been releasing sneak peeks into the project throughout 2019, it has been some time since we’ve heard from the Denver based duo David Schmitt and Tommy Cooperman.
Breathe Carolina have had immense success in their career by dipping their toes in both genre pools, with their 2013 album, Savages, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s Dance and Electronic Album as well as gaining millions of streams like their 2017 hit, “Rhythm is a Dancer”, and their remix of, “When You Leave.” Now as we reach the end of the year and dive back into their world of music, we’re curious as to see what is coming next.
We had the chance to ask Breathe Carolina about their new album, Dead, their favorite aspects of EDM production, remixing Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and more.
RR: Hello Dave and Tommy! We are close to finishing out 2019, how has the year treated the both of you?
BC: This year has been incredible, probably the busiest we’ve ever been!
RR: It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen some music from just Breathe Carolina and on November 15th we saw your new album drop, Dead, as well as your single, “July”. What are you most excited for fans to hear on the new album?
BC: We are just excited for fans to dive into our world, we wrote these songs without any idea of what people would think of them and really stayed true and had fun, so we are excited.
RR: So Dave you are bringing back singing the vocals, how long has it been? What did you miss most about using your own voice for your music?
BC: I sing live at all the shows and randomly throughout some of the more recent stuff, but as fully being the only voice its been great! I really found a vibe again I was happy with, it’s been nice going back and finding my love for it again.
RR: So you two are all about bridging the gap between your two passion points of punk rock and electronic music. Why is it important to you to combine your fan bases from both sides?
BC: It’s just another example of us wanting to bring people into our world- there isn’t a lot of that going on as far EDM with more rock style vocals and stuff, and it just comes naturally to us to go there, so we went with it!
RR: We read that you feel that stepping into the EDM world, everything is much more DIY. What parts of that do you two find the most fun and parts that have been the most challenging?
BC: Its fun being more in control of everything you’re doing from artwork, to setting up the full live show, to executing the business side – it’s great to be in control. The flip side is that it’s much more work, making it challenging, but we love it so we can’t complain.
RR: So we have to know what inspired you to remix Smash Mouth’s “All Star?” We’re surprised we don’t see more throwback remixes like this.
BC: Well the idea came about when their team hit up our manager and he brought the idea to us. It was a huge song for so long and it was even more special as it was the anniversary of it as well. We couldn’t say no! The guys in Smash Mouth are awesome dudes, although we haven’t met in person, working through emails and text/social media they have been really great.
RR: Are there any other blast-from-the-past remixes that you think would be fun to do?
BC: We want to do like one of Taking Back Sunday’s big songs from back in the day.
RR: We see that you have some live shows booked for the rest of the year. Any of those are you are really excited for? Will you be doing a bigger tour for 2020 for the new album?
BC: Well the thing about performing DJ sets, we are always on tour, all year long, so we will be adding a lot more shows to the album tour!
RR: Any other tracks or collaborations in the works?
BC: We have a bunch of music we have sitting around and we are releasing an acoustic version of our album soon, we are excited for that.
RR: One last fun question: If you were to have a huge Friendsgiving get together, what food would you bring? Any activities or games that would be. A must have?
BC: I love to cook so I would be in charge of the roast as well as bringing a lot of wine.
We thank David and Tommy for taking the time to talk to us. You can stream Breathe Carolina’s latest LP, Dead, on all major platforms now.
