The Brightside Movement is taking a powerful step forward with the release of two EP’s, Apex and Future Abstract. With fresh, heavy sounds and significant improvements to production quality Eric Tully is breaking new ground on what WRR considers his biggest and best releases to date.
Brightside’s dark and wobbly soundscape is in full effect on all nine tracks. The bass is spacious and full, and it drops in delightfully confusing ways. The beats fluctuate from down to mid-tempo and the sonic influences include everything from eastern string music to reggae and hip-hop. Eric’s skill is apparent from the first track, ‘Diversiform’, which seamlessly progresses from down to mid to up-tempo. ‘Just Watch’ is the biggest ‘banger’ on the EP’s, featuring simple, old-school womping and wobbling with help from New Jersey producer Ludge. ‘Bay Area L’ with its chill, hip-hop vibe is perfect for what the name implies.
From its inception the Brightside Movement has encouraged conscious thought as much as it encourages dancing. Try listening to ‘The Network’ off Apex without getting “mad as hell” about the problems facing our world today. Try listening to ‘Double Take’ off Future Abstract without throwing an imaginary middle finger to anyone who hates on your dreams, feelings and creativity. “We’re different,” says a Rasta on ‘Bay Area L’. “People are always afraid of what’s different.” Brightside’s music is certainly different, but for fans of bass, truth and fluid sound there is nothing to be afraid of.
We caught up with Eric before his set at Webster Hall for his thoughts on the new tunes and what’s next for the Movement. “I wanted to improve my production, specifically with the kick and the synthesizer,” he says. “I’ve shown that I can mix, but I’m not some ‘Facebook artist.’ I want to show people that I can produce this music, and well.” He told us a full-length album is in the works along with a possible collaboration with Ludge. “I want to take my music in a heavier direction.”
We’ve already said Brightside can’t be missed at Infrasound. You can also catch the Movement at F.A.R.M. Fest, Germination Music Festival, Disc Jam and in Northeast cities right now as he tours with Vibe Street.
