Yesterday BT took to twitter in an effort to educate young producers on staying respectful and loyal. He explained a situation that started around three years ago, beginning with the discovery of Porter Robinson‘s music on MySpace. According to BT, young producer Porter Robinson’s sound and style was inspiring, so naturally he extended out his hand out in friendship. The two talked regularly and even began working on some tunes together. But as you read BT’s twitter story (below), he goes on to say that Robinson’s rise to stardom made him unfortunately unreachable.
BT stated in a tweet: “quickly Porter seemed too cool to interact,” and followed up with, “The music we’d began Porter claimed he couldn’t finish because he didn’t have time or couldn’t get anything good going amongst other things“.
Considering the time, trust, and overall friendship BT claimed to invest in Porter, we can understand that BT expected the same respect and loyalty in return. Toward the end of his Twitter tangent, BT goes a step further in explaining why this situation has affected him so much as well as what motivated him to bring it up.
Tiesto then chimed in, stating:
“you are so right…there’s not much loyalty out there! (And think about the artists you’ve broken! I could name 20)”
Surprisingly, Tiesto quickly deleted his statement after BT quote tweeted it. It’s possible that he has gone through a similar situation(s) considering he’s a dance music veteran as well. Regardless, the new wave of up-and-coming talent need to stay true to the culture that they’re apart of. To me, that means learning about, understanding, and respecting the artists and music that came before them – making what they do possible.
It’s also important to remember that respect and loyalty is important beyond the music industry. The statement shown below, made by BT, can be generalized to any situation in everyday life.
“Remember that whatever you do, there has always been help to achieve it that deserves acknowledgement”
In my opinion, BT did a fantastic job getting his point across while still remaining respectful of Porter Robinson. He’s a class act. Porter hasn’t publicly responded and I don’t think he will, this kind of situation might be better off solved behind closed doors.
