M!NT the young man from Colorado has released his hour long set from Burning Man earlier this month. The Brooklyn based producer put together a dope set that reflected his hip-hop roots paired with lots of bass. He threw down this year at Camp Question Mark, one of the unique stages that the Burn crew assembled for musical performances. It’s pretty tough to find pictures of the “Camp?” stage, as a number of google searches yielded no pictures of this year’s stage.
This collection of carefully selected tracks has its roots in hip-hop, and includes a lot of unknown artists (to me at least). I recognize a lot of names off the Smoker’s Cough label, the crew that M!NT runs with. There’s some B Riddimz of Technicolor Lenses, Esseks, and his roommate (fun fact) Space Jesus. Besides that a lot of these names are unrecognizable to me, which is why I thought to bring some attention to them as well as provide a look at the music that is played on The Playa.
KRNE – “Akari”
A lot of really cool stuff happening on this track by KRNE, the future bass producer from Oakland. Awesome, fat horns and a lot of weird accompaniments make this a great track to throw in at the beginning of a mix, as M!NT did.
M!NT- “Spooked”
The second original track to make it into the set, “Spooked” is a dark, brooding track giving us a taste of what M!NT is all about. I’m impressed by the fullness in this track without it being too much. He keeps that repeating vocal line going for most of the song but manages to keep it from being repetitive by subtly moving around pieces in the background.
L W K Y feat. Theodor – “Flow”
L W K Y is an Australian duo that’s also putting out some really awesome trap/hip-hop instrumentals. This track featuring Theodor follows the same vibe as “Spooked” with a dark and rambling tone thats slightly more upbeat. An awesome track from these two youngsters from down under.
Mr. Carmack – “les djinns”
Oooooo a little Carmack, my ears perked up when I heard this mixed in. Carmack takes “Trophies” by Drake and warps the lyrics almost beyond recognition but those horns that the song kicks off with are engrained in my mind. Some tight snare and a mellow build then 1:28 gets you swuggin out. Simply put, this song is so dope.
M!NT – “Twenty-Five”
After dropping an unreleased track by his homies Esseks and Space Jesus, M!NT comes in with some more of that chill trap. Super crisp percussion and dark synths work together with the gangster-ish lyrical sample. If M!NT keeps putting out work like this he could make twenty-five a year.
B Riddimz – Rookerie Runs (M!NT Remix)
M!NT took to another of his buddies, the drummer for Technicolor Lenses, B Riddimz for this remix. He brought this in when he was nearing the end of his set and I’m sure the Burners responded well to what M!NT calls, “one his the most fun tracks I’ve ever worked on.” After setting the tone for the first 45ish minutes M!NT begins to unleash some really nasty stuff on his listeners and this is definitely on the list.
Lido – Lost feat. Muri (swto Remix)
To close M!NT takes us out with a remix by Stwo, an awesome producer out of Paris. The French really know their electronic and Stwo is no exception. He takes the original by Lido and makes it so sensual with the soft synths at the drop. An awesome track to round out this set by M!NT that leaves me dreaming about what it would’ve been like to catch this set at The Playa.
