The folks over at Obfessed developed one of the coolest graphs we’ve seen in a while. It shows how many square feet each festival goer has at nine different festivals. Here at WRR, we’ve been to all the fests on the list. Personally, I’ve been to the one with the most room, Bonnaroo with 381 sq. feet per Bonnaroovian, and the second to most crowded one, Ultra Miami with 25 sq. feet to each Ultranaut. I can tell you right now, this chart does not lie. The amount of open space to roam at Roo versus the intimate, sometimes claustrophobic feeling at Ultra are incredibly noticeable.
Every festival has it’s own feel: some are about sprawling out in the green grass and maybe enjoying some yoga. Others are about rubbing as much of your own sweat onto the person next to you’s arm the entire day. To some people, this has a big impact on their overall festival experience. It’s a good thing to consider when deciding which festivals you want to attend this season.
It’s not a huge surprise that Bonnaroo (above) tops the list considering it takes place on a 700 acre farm in the middle of Tennessee. Boston Calling (below) on the other hand, takes place on two stages at City Hall Plaza smack dab in the middle of downtown Boston; obviously two very different settings. You also have to consider that a lot of the larger festivals have space for majority of attendees to camp for the duration of the festival.
To see all of the data Obfessed gathered, check it out here. You can determine the ‘elbow room index‘ for just about any festival or event! Simply divide the square feet of festival grounds (often found on the festival’s about page) by the number of festival attendees per day (also found on the festival official site or a quick Google search).
