We recently sat down with up and coming New Orleans based artist, Carneyval at Buku Music & Arts Project. He’s been on our radar for quite some time due to his funky beats and clever remakes. This guy has a diverse sound set that listeners will absolutely love. Let’s get to know a little more about Carneyval.
You’re originally from Virginia and moved to NOLA a few years ago. What is the best part about living in New Orleans?
“Well, I came down to New Orleans to study at Tulane, so my journey started there. The best part about NOLA is the people. I love everyone down here. There’s always something to do, always a show to go to.”
Did you celebrate Mardi Gras like any true NOLA native would?
“I did! I went down to Bourbon street with my buddies and we watched the crowd make complete asses of themselves! It’s definitely fun to watch.”
Your music is very cultured and diverse. One song you have an indian sitaar vibe, others you sample 90s rappers, and then some are just straight grooving. What influenced your music?
“Mostly just listening to different types of music and my favorite artists. I listen to them and just try to put my own take on it. People and experiences definitely help inspire my music as well as the culture down here in New Orleans.”
Do you play any other instruments?
“Yeah, I play piano/keys and guitar. I started playing drums when I was little.”
How did you know you wanted to become a musician?
“I grew up listening to good music. My uncle got me into playing drums and I grew up watching my brother play guitar. It was just kind of the family thing to do.”
Do you have any plans this summer?
“No festival plans, but I will be playing some shows here and there.”
What is the most embarrassing song on your phone right now?
“Initially I was thinking “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars, but everyone loves that song. I would have to say “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran because I was trying to mess around with it in Ableton.”
Do you have any surprises for us during your set?
“Yeah! My brother is going to come up and perform with me. He plays guitar, so he’ll be helping me out with some crazy riffs.”
Which one of your songs hypes you up the most?
“I am definitely stoked to perform some stuff with my brother. It’s all my own music so I’m excited to play all of it.”
Which Mardi Gras float embodies your sound the best?
“That would have to be the crazy neon train. It has so many lights and different colors, similar to my music. ”
Fuck, Marry, Kill three Buku artists from any lineup
“Oooh that’s a good one haha! Fuck- Ellie Goulding Marry- Ellie Goulding Kill- ASAP Rocky. I really have a thing for Ellie!”
What is next for Carneyval?
“My next steps are just to keep making more music and touring wherever I can.”
If you weren’t able to catch Carney’s set at Buku, here are some of our favorite tracks from the Virginia native producer.
