So, The Chemical Brothers started off with “Go”, but that was it. Many were left asking, “why didn’t The Chemical Brothers play their hits?” after last Saturday’s set at London’s Printworks. Yes, we all love a bit of techno, don’t us get wrong, and Bugged Out! did state that the duo would play a DJ set, but maybe they could have worked in “Hey Boy Hey Girl” or “Galvanize”.
To be honest, The Chemical Brothers played a killer set and the sound they seemed to align to was similar to that of their 2005 album Push The Button, but techno definitely reigned and the iconic lights of Printworks brought the crowd in from other parts of the venue. As mentioned above, The Chemical Brothers started off with tracks like “Go”, “Got Glint?” and “Dissolve” from their own repertoire.
Throughout the set and after speaking to other attendees, the general consensus was that The Chemical Brothers could be producing and releasing new music in the future, if only remixes of their sound packages from the past. With a slightly older crowd in Printworks, in contrast to other LWE events, especially during their 001 issue last year, which saw 20-somethings take to the Print Halls.
As well the main act, Alfie and Billy Goffey, cousins from Bristol that make up Cousn, UK’s own Lemmy Ashton, London stalwart HAAi, unique house group Cowboy Rhythmbox, newcomer Kiwi and Anjunadeep regular Dusky played excellent sets before Erol Alkan took to the stage and reminded us all of the fantastic summer we had at XOYO. Erol went acid and played the likes of Aroy Dee’s Acid Mix of R-A-G’s “Dreadfully Nervous” and the Tiefschwarz Vocal Mix of Spektrum’s “Kinda New”.
