Childish Gambino the alias for Donald Glover just released his new album titled Camp. I’ve streamed the album about ten times now and it will probably be on repeat for the next week or so.
Consequence of Sound gives the album 4.5 stars out of 5 and said;
This LP, though, sees some of the focus moved toward making more of what could be considered straight-up “hits.” Gambino’s always had a sense for creating bangers and anthems, but these latest tracks feel different in scope. “Bonfire” is the perfect lead single, a killer synthesis of his charisma and attitude, his fondness for off-kilter beats, and his plethora of pop culture references.
Meanwhile some asshole “freelance writer” for Forbes says that Camp is no fun and that Childish Gambino will only be popular because of Glover’s shameless self promotion.
Needless to say, the album is all over the place, and while Glover’s body of music has always exhibited a strain of schizophrenia, that’s usually been a thematic issue he’s dealt with through sheer pluck and personality.
I think that Glover is one of the most talented artists in a while who some people may look as a sell out because they are pursuing more talents than just one. Stream the album via NPR and let me know what you think.
