A master of mystery and modern, meticulously crafted house music, Claptone has risen to become an electronic music icon while himself remaining in the shadows.
His signature sound is paradoxical; marked by expansive, palpable soulfulness while remaining devoted to auditory minimalism. In Fantast, Claptone brings 13 tracks that build upon this paradox and draw listeners deep into the roots of his relationship with sound and storytelling.
The album weaves around the inner expanses of the Claptone universe with vivid detail and nuance, leading listeners into a sound induced fantasy world where things seem a little softer, dreamier and even a bit haunting.
From the opening track “Birdsong,” an effortlessly floating, head nodding collaboration with Zola Blood to the album’s finish with “Alone,” a Blaenavon collaboration that melds smooth, deep house beats with the indie rock band’s velvety psychedelic lyricism, Fantast can be likened to a warm lucid dream that you may never want to wake up from.
Stand out collaborations include tracks with Kele Okereke, Ben Duffy, Nathan Nicholson and more – and oh, the album debuted as the No. 1 electronic album in the U.S. and U.K.
Claptone had this to say about his new work of art:
“Over the last two years it has been a great pleasure to work on this album as a counterpoint to the hectic world of travelling as a DJ. To lose myself when making music, to dive into and create my very own realm of beauty. I admit it’s a dreamy, a heartfelt, at times a naive and surely escapist album, but what to do if one – on the quest for his soul – develops a strong desire to go back to his roots, back to nature? Did I find myself on that journey? Rather not. But I found some beautiful moments in the green, out in the woods, out in the fields, under the moon and in the night, moments, which I want to share with you. And there is one thing I learned and now it can be told, I am and have always been a ‘Fantast’.”
