Six months ago, Claptone held his first Australian Masquerade show in Melbourne. This past weekend, he hammered home that if he throws a party, the masses will come.
His Australasian tour stopped in Melbourne this past weekend and showed that he’s no longer just testing the Australian waters, he’s jumped straight in. With a setup that rivaled any city festival, he brought the celebration to the Coburg Velodrome.
The unique venue featured the banked velodrome front and center and surrounded it with bars, food trucks, and most importantly two stages. The main stage was housed in a tent that could have easily been an attraction at a multi-day festival and was the setting for the headlining talent. For those that wanted to break away from the crowd, a circus inspired side tent was available and showcased heaps of local talent. Either way, you couldn’t go wrong with what was on offer.
While the host was off playing a set at Groovin’ the Moo, a few of his friends played to a packed house. Lovebirds was the first of the headliners to grace the main stage and pumped up the crowd with a sprightly set that mixed disco with tech-house. His good vibes were contagious and pretty soon the crowd was singing along with every song.
Boogs brought the local flavor, as the experienced deejay did more than just keep the seat warm for the host. As a resident of Revolver Upstairs for the last twelve years, he knows exactly how the Melbourne crowd likes to get down. He kept the energy going and attracted more and more people to the center of the festival.
Finally, out came the man himself to show out and get everybody moving. Flanked on all sides by giant representations of his iconic masquerade mask, he lorded over the crowd as only someone in complete control of a massive congregation can. As the first notes of “Puppet Theatre” came over the speaker system, Claptone officially announced his entrance.
What followed was a masterclass in house music deejaying. Fans were ecstatic to hear him play hit after hit, expertly mixed with a deft touch. His build ups were epic, his drops crisp. You could tell he enjoys being in Australia, and made sure to let the crowd know with his energetic vibe and perfectly crafted sound. His hour and a half set flew by and left the crowd with a tired but contented glow.
No doubt about it, Claptone never disappoints and Melbourne loves him.
