After what seems like an eternity, the ever-ominous duo CLOAKS have emerged from the shadows to present their debut single, “Wraith”. An innovative take on a classic sound, this heavy-hitting track is contemporary bass music at its best. Released via the Pantheon imprint, “Wraith” is available now for purchase or free download.
We were lucky enough to chat with CLOAKS (real names: Joey Fisher and Chris Curran) and learn a bit more about the project. Read on to find out what the future holds for these two and be sure to keep an eye on them in coming months – big things are in store for these guys.
RR: How would you describe your sound in three words?
“Dark. Melodic. Heavy.”
RR: What are each of your musical backgrounds like? How did you end up coming together to form CLOAKS?
Joey: “I played in hardcore bands.”
Chris: “I’ve played in, and produced, a lot of hardcore and punk rock bands.”
“We came together six years ago as friends and a few years later started a group called TBMA. We moved on and started a new chapter called CLOAKS.”
RR: I’m sure there are some ups and downs to working as a duo, what are some of the pros and cons?
“It actually works well for us. We are able to balance the group, and each other, out in a very positive manner. We each like different types of music and can bring these elements to the table collectively.”
RR: So what artists would you say have influenced you the most?
“Skrillex, Diplo, R.L. Grime, Flosstradamus, Bro Safari, 12th Planet, Protohype, Slander, Nghtmre, Adventure Club, Audien, and Brillz.”
RR: As many producers can attest to, it’s not uncommon to find yourself stuck in a creative rut. Where do you usually find inspiration?
“Step away from a project we’re struggling with and get a fresh perspective. As funny as it sounds, go do ‘regular people’ activities. We’re both avid gym-goers. We also enjoy our outside friendships and hobbies a lot as well. This helps to clear our heads and get us back on track.”
RR: Finally, what does the future hold for CLOAKS?
“This is the first single of over 20 tracks we have on deck. Just gonna push ourselves hard and do whatever we need to do.”
