Two words: Circus Rave.
One question: Why the hell hasn’t this happened before?
Club Cirque hosted its inaugural festival on Oct. 19th outside Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The event, billed as a chance to run away and join the circus, was organized by Disco Donnie Presents and Sunset Events, known around Tampa for other shows like Sunset Music Festival. Two white, swooping tents covered the south lot while white Christmas lights connected them to an open air area.
Lanterns and colorful, inflatable chandelier-like structures lined the inside of the tents as acrobats juggled fire outside. The entire back half of each tent was a bar, so there was never a line to buy beer or water. The Bass Tent, which was about a third of the size as the Main Tent, hosted some trappy jams with Crizzly, Torro Torro, Schoolboy and Nerd Rage.
It was a great spot for some to escape Waka Flocka, because I’m 90 percent sure no one bought tickets saying, “You know who I really want to see at this? That rapper guy from 8th grade.” The main tent filled back up for Borgore, who was celebrating his birthday with two pole dancers on stage. Steve Aoki started his set around 10:45, and brought his well-known antics and energy. He also brought a stage that blew f*cking minds.
It looked like a typical production, with a large video panel underneath the decks. Two 8-foot, vertical lines of hexagons bordered each side of the set up.
Then it happened.
About 30 minutes into the set, during a particularly lively drop, the stage literally came to life. The gahdamn hexagons were people in the sweetest LED costumes ever conceived by man.
Someone captured the mind-melting moment:
Their arms were confetti cannons, too, as one would expect. The show ended at midnight, leading many to keep partying at the official after party at Amp in Ybor. While tickets were just $10 less than the festival tickets ($35 for the festival, $25 for the after party), it was totally worth it. Why?
Three reasons: Carnage was absolutely Insane, a wasted Borgore celebrated his birthday and bitches went CRAZY.
Let’s start with Carnage. His live mixes always pump up a crowd, but I’m pretty sure half the crowd almost passed out from awesome. Then there was Borgore. He was surrounded by scantily clad young women with a serene smile painted across his face. He popped bottles. He grounded on ladies. He jumped into the crowd with Torro Torro and surfed around for no less than 2 minutes. This debauchery inspired many young women to storm the stage. At least 50 ladies crowded around Borgore and Carnage.
Almost all of them were backwards, shaking their asses for an appreciative and drunk crowd. Overall, the festival and after party were great. They made what was supposed to be a stop on Aoki’s Aokify North American tour into a full blown circus rave.
We hope it comes back again next year, but with a wider variety of artists.
