The beautiful city of San Diego is known for it’s picturesque views, breathtaking sunsets, and in the last couple of years, the home of FNGRS CRSSD bi-annual music festival, CRSSD Fest.
Last weekend marked CRSSD Fest’s return to the Waterfront Park for it’s Spring edition for two days of glorious house and techno music. The palm tree filled 12-acre park overlooked the bayfront, and held huge fountains that festivalgoers particularly enjoyed dancing in. It was the ideal location for not only it’s views but also it’s ease, as it granted attendees many nearby options for hotel and transportation access. The park housed three stages stretched throughout it’s entirety with various vendors, specialty bars, craft beer tents, and of course the wildly popular merch tent. The festival had a mellow laid back vibe to it with more of a focus on the finely curated music than attractions, production, and “rave culture”.
The first day brought us the likes of Tensnake, Amtrac, Yotto, Moon Boots, Mija, Lane 8, Justin Martin, Âme, and more. Arriving day one, we made our way through security, and were instantly welcomed to the sounds of The Palms stage, as attendee’s flooded the area adjacent to it, in order to capture moments in front of the “wish you were here” sign.
We quickly made our way to the City Steps stage, as we were eager to start the sunny day with Anjunadeep star player, Yotto. The City Steps stage had fairly minimal production; utilizing the infamous FNGRS CRSSD logo amongst the wood paneled backdrop. Yotto was the ideal start to the day, mesmerizing us with his edit of Above & Beyond’s “Counting Down The Days” and his take on RÜFÜS DU SOL’s “Like An Animal”. We followed up Yotto’s set with none other than Amtrac at our favorite stage, The Palms. Hence the name, the stage was filled with lush green palm trees with an extended cover lined with CRSSD umbrellas that hung right above us. Amtrac truly stood out on stage, and not just because of his bright red jacket, but due to the fact that he played a beautifully melodic house set, dropping releases from his new 1987 EP, and inviting a female vocalist to accompany him.
As the sunset was approaching, we decided to head over to the Ocean View stage to catch the sweet sounds of Lost Frequencies. Ocean View was the largest stage of the bunch, resembling the “typical” festival stage made up of lasers and LED panels. The Belgium producer’s melodic style was just what we needed to watch the sun go down, playing his most well known hit “Are You With Me” and many releases from his latest album, ‘Less Is More’.
After singing along to Lost Frequencies “Beautiful Life”, we decided it was time to end our night at The Palms with our favorites of the day, Lane 8 and Justin Martin. Lane 8 delivered a phenomenal performance, leaving fans in awe from the very beginning of his set, opening with his remix of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s “Innerbloom”. His unique deep house style left fans in a trance like state, playing all of our favorites, such as “Diamonds” and “Fingerprint”. Finally, the time had come for Dirtybird co-founder, Justin Martin, to deliver his bass house sounds. Justin did just that, playing his groove filled tune, “Don’t Go”, and an unreleased Bjork edit that he’s been teasing fans with since Dirtybird Campout. Overall, Justin Martin was the perfect ending to our night, leaving us re-energized for the CRSSD after party with Bob Moses.
Initially, Sunday was not the ideal start to the day, as rain poured down on us awaiting entry to the park. However, once we were in, Sonny Fodera’s feel good house music flooded our ears, and all was forgotten. He dropped many of the tracks from his latest EP, ‘Frequently Flying,’ including “You & I” and “Caught Up”. He kept “The Vibe” going with his Motez remix and also blessed us with Ardalan’s remix of “Hello Clouds”.
Sonny Fodera’s uplifting set was followed by Dusky’s live performance at the Ocean View stage. This was the meeting spot for many of our friends, so it was a particularly memorable moment for us. The duo dropped their tech house heavy track,”Yoohoo”, among other originals that had fans grooving.
We concluded the weekend with the Claude father himself, Claude VonStroke, as he took over The Palms Stage, and transformed it to The Birdhouse. Fans flocked to the stage to get a glimpse of the Dirtybird co-founder. VonStroke gave us “The Feels” with Walker & Royce’s remix of Justin Martin’s hit, took us to the “Promised Land” with Chris Lorenzo, and had Dirtybird players moving to “Barrump”. The highlight of his set was when he mesmerized the crowd with Gui Boratto’s “Matryoshka”.
Overall, CRSSD Festival gave us beautiful moments and unforgettable memories. We would like to thank FNGRS CRSSD for putting together an exceptional event and inviting us to witness the scenic views, top-notch artists, and overall good vibes of their sold out festival. CRSSD was unlike any festival we have previously attended and we definitely plan to return for the Fall edition. We highly recommend adding CRSSD Fest to your music festival bucket list. Make sure to check back with us for future CRSSD news. See you in the Fall!
