It’s been a busy week, so we’ve decided to double up this article with both episode two & three of Daft Punk’s ‘The Collaborators’ video series – we don’t want you to miss a beat. A few days ago episode two with Todd Edwards was uploaded to TheCreatorsProject YouTube page.
“It’s been very difficult to harbor this secret, and I am waiting for this album to intoxicate and infect everyone so I am not making music in a sterile world anymore.” – Todd Edwards
During his interview he made some very strong statements about the new Daft Punk album which left me extremely excited. He mentioned that the pair wanted to give their album a “west coast” vibe, going back to the time of Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, and The Eagles.
Todd touches on creating records with the pair and how their recording of live instrumentation is a lost art form. In so many words it seems to me that he thinks ‘Random Access Memories’ is going to change the current scene – I agree. In my opinion this album is exactly what the electronic dance music community needs right now, it’s going to be extremely refreshing.
After you watch episode two you’re going to want to check out episode three with Nile Rodgers. He opens his interview with these words:
What do great artists do when you see a world around you that’s in turmoil? Some of the best artists, make you feel good. They look to the future. – Nile Rodgers
“Groove is everything”, would you agree? I do, to me the groove of a record determines whether I’m going to listen to it a few times – or constantly until it’s embedded in my brain. After giving his views on groove, Rodgers goes on to compare the magic of Donna Summer’s ‘Love to Love You Baby’ to his collaboration with Thomas and Guy.
From the passion in his voice you can easily tell that there is going to be a lot of soul in their collab. N.R. says his disco style is labeled as jazz fusion, it features tight grooves and single jazz licks, he uses Chic’s breakout hit ‘Le Freak’ as an example. I don’t know about you, but these ‘The Collaborators’ episode and inspiring and eye opening. I just can’t get enough and I think I may be a little over excited for ‘Random Access Memories’.
