Daft Punk To Finally Tour? [UPDATED: DEBUNKED]

 

Update: Turns out this entire story was a hoax. ICM Partners does not represent Daft Punk in any way and the duo never pursued a concert at Devils Town.

Daft Punk has established themselves as perhaps the most illusive artists in the electronic dance music world. Despite the financial and critical success of their 2013 album Random Access Memories, a live tour has yet to be officially announced. However, we may have just gotten the first details on a potential 2014 tour.

According to a recent report, Daft Punk approached the Devils Tower National Monument this past fall to discuss a potential concert to occur over summer 2014. The concert would have taken transpired on a private island next to the Devils Tower, included the elaborate use of lasers at the base of the tower, and gathered 50,000 people to the site.

The park asked for approval from six Native American tribes, who unanimously decided that the concert would have infringed upon their site. President Theodore Roosevelt declared the Devils Tower National Monument as the first National Monument in the United States in 1906. Reed Robinson, superintendent of the site, stated:

No event is going to be occurring in Devils Tower. Anything that was proposed is a non-starter, is considered an adverse action according to the National Historic Preservation Act, and goes against the Park Service management approach.”

In perhaps the most interesting piece of news, Reed Robinson also stated that Daft Punk’s agency (ICM Partners) may have been looking over possible venues for a series of concerts to occur over summer 2014. Given the group’s inclination toward unique venues (such as setting the new album’s launch party at the sparsely-populated town of Wee Waa, Australia), it would make sense why Daft Punk expressed interest in Devils Tower.

Devils Tower also relates directly to Daft Punk’s use of extraterrestrial motifs. A user on the Daft Club forum noted an interesting connection between Daft Punk’s affinity for the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Devils Tower. In the film, the central aliens land on Devils Tower. Daft Punk’s music video of “Lose Yourself to Dance” mirrors the landing scene from the film, particularly the image of groups of people looking up toward a ship. The duo has also incorporated the use of the film’s famous melody during their Alive 2007 sets and the surprise appearance during the band Phoenix’s 2010 Madison Square Garden concert.

Given the news, it would appear as though Daft Punk may finally tour this year. Whether the Devils Tower event would have been a one-off show or a part of a series of concerts remains to be seen.
