If you haven’t had a helping of your Daily Bread yet, it’s time for you to get acquainted with beat maker Rhett Whatley coming out of Atlanta with flowing electro-soul for your ear buds. With a style reminiscent of his hip-hop influences J Dilla and DJ Premier, Whatley has crafted a sound at the rendezvous of electro-soul and hip-hop with smooth beats accompanying classic vocals sampled straight from vinyl.
His latest release is a remix of the classic “Roses” by fellow ATLiens Outkast. He speaks about the track saying, “This Remix was inspired by a trip to Athens, GA. The original version of ‘Roses’ by Outkast came on the radio half way through the drive and everyone in the car was belting it at the top of their lungs. I knew I had to flip it up a bit.” And flip it up he did, injecting the perfect amount of his own flavor to this track. With a classic like “Roses” you don’t want to totally overhaul the track, and DB adds just the right measure of ebbing and flowing synth leads and funky basslines to compliment Andre 3000’s voice.
Daily Bread will be featured on CounterPoint’s unique Atlanta Stage on Friday and will also be playing at Taloa Music Festival in Guthrie, OK in September. His live show integrates the live drumming of his homie Eric Jefferson and some live guitar as well. No one can deny the awesomeness of live instruments and electro-soul and we’re anticipating a groovy CP set. We hope to see you there!
