Over a month ago, in our article about the revival of House, we pointed out the similarity between a handful of recent house hits, and predicted that this big room style (dubbed by some as Melbourne House) would quickly become the next over-used sound in EDM.
Since then, this sound has become even more popular as producers have noticed the trend and hopped on the bandwagon, seeking to create songs similar to these hits – and Daleri released their “Epic Mashleg,” which makes the comparison even more obvious.
Within one minute, Daleri cuts between the 16 highest-charting House songs on Beatport. Some of these cuts are hardly noticeable, but even when the changes are obvious, the songs are strikingly similar-sounding. Through this mashup, Daleri is trolling both the producers who have been following suit with this trend and the nature of the Beatport charts.
As Beatport tracks are usually highly priced, your average listener doesn’t tend to purchase many songs from the site. For the most part, those buying the tracks and contributing to the performance of these songs on the charts are DJs. Something that this mashup makes obvious is the fact that, while Beatport charts are a great gauge of what DJs are playing, they aren’t necessarily a measure of the “best” songs out there – just the most popular tracks you’ll hear in sets.
Deadmau5, cheeky as ever, just put out a track on his Soundcloud page this evening entitled “DROP DA BOMB outerspace mix,” with the genre listed as “samestep.” As he’s done before with some of the popular trends in EDM, mau5 slapped together a quick clip of a beat that is easily on par with all these tracks to point out how easy it would be for him to hop on the bandwagon. Cheers to Joel for staying as trollish and true to himself as ever.
