Canadian dubstep producer Datsik recently sat down with Rollingstone to talk about rapping over his own track, “Too Late to Say No.” Besides producing some of the most classic records during the “dubstep-era” Troy Beetles also is known to have an affinity for hip-hop, which led to him rapping over the track “Too Late to Say No.” While the track is around a year old, he recently spoke with Rollingstone on the use of his own vocals and some interesting things to say.
“I never really used my own vocals over one of my tracks. So on that song, I’m actually the one rapping over it…That was definitely a different experience for me, but I also learned quite a bit on how to make my voice sound good and not make it sound so much like me. Some people were like, ‘Yo, he sucks, you shouldn’t be rapping over his own tracks…But then a lot of the people were like, ‘Yo, this is really cool.’ So I wasn’t expecting anyone to really, particularly like my voice or vocals. So the fact anyone was saying anything good about it is a plus for me and it’s kind of inspiring. Now I might try and do it again.” – Troy Beetles AKA Datsik when speaking to Rollingstone
I personally love the idea of a producer stepping out of his comfort zone to do something such as sing over your own track, and would love to hear more from Datsik, though he currently doesn’t have any plans of it as of now. He also stated in the interview that his follow-up to his last EP Cold-Blooded is coming soon, which may be an LP with 7 to 8 tracks released on it. We expect Datsik to keep trying new things, and are eagerly awaiting new music from the dubstep commando.
On top of this, Datsik announced his fall tour today, entitled “Firepower Records Most Wanted Tour” presented by Rockstar Energy Drinks. The tour will feature Firepower artists such as Datsik, Funtcase, Antiserum & Mayhem, Protohype, Sub Antix, MUST DIE, The Frim, and RiseAtNight. Tour dates will be powered by PK Sound, the group who brought you 100,000 watts of bass on Excision’s latest Executioner Tour.
Tickets and dates can be found on the tour website.
