I’d be lying if I said Destroid wasn’t one of my most anticipated acts of this upcoming summer festival season. The group – a trifecta of heavy bass artists Excision, Downlink, and former Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka – is hailed as a “live dubstep band” in the same vein as Modestep or the aforementioned Pendulum, complete with specially designed MIDI “guitars”.
Ever since the group’s music premiered in Excision’s Shambhala 2012 mix I’ve been wanting more, on Tuesday my prayers were answered. ‘Blast Off’ features Japanese bass Godzilla and Rottun Recordings artist Ajapai and is a made-for-the-stage banger.
Starting off with some guitar-esque mid-range synths and a pitter-patter of electro-keys, the track quickly builds before dropping into a slow-grinding industrial-dub orgy. The growling basslines and thumping drum track continue through the second drop, giving way to a nice DnB outro as the song comes to a close.
