Ahead of New Year’s Eve Echostage went through a transformation, from venue to house party. They had elected the Mad Decent founder himself, Diplo, as the NYE pre-party host and it would be a mistake to say that he didn’t bring the heat.
The opening acts seemingly effortlessly warmed up the incoming crowd with some house records that got the blood pumping throughout the venue, preparing attendees for a night of dancing to some of the ratchet-est beats this side of the United States.
At roughly 12:30 the lights went dim and a loud roar was uttered as everyone in the crowd was more than ready for what was about to take place.
Enter Diplo. Enter rowdiness. Enter bass. Enter twerking. He opened his set with Jack U’s hit “Take U There,” a perfect party-starter. Though, the highlight of his performance was when D.C.’s very own Wale took the stage to perform “Slight Work.” However we can’t forget about the legendary twerk wall – Glow girls and select crowd members joined Diplo on the stage to “Express Themselves.”
Overall, when you set aside the live performances and twerk walls that Diplo’s sets have to offer, you can’t help but appreciate his eclectic track selection and DJing ability. He covered a bit of everything including moombahton, trap and hip-hop while reading the crowd and playing to his strengths. His flow was outstanding and it was clear that D.C. approved.
We’re hoping that Diplo hits Echostage, the hottest concert venue on the east coast, a few more time in 2015.
