A few years ago, dance music blogs were just music blogs focused on discovery and promotion for artists. Now many have evolved into “online magazines” covering the scene and culture surrounding it. We post a healthy mix of news, features, editorials and music here on WhiteRaverRafting.com living up to our tagline “We Are The Scene”. But for those looking for more music than we can cover, here are some of the best ways to discover new tunes online.
1.) Hypem
Hypem aggregates all of the different music blogs for a mix of electronic, hip-hop and pop. It’s basically the brain of the music blogosphere with only certain sites making the cut. Sometimes you can logon and press play listening all of the way through to the end. Another cool tip is to search for artists and then sort by the number of hearts. It’s an excellent way to discover new remixes that you may not have heard before.
2.) MOG
For the audiophiles out there, MOG streams at 320 kbps. That’s incredible clarity offered to you for free through the webapp, something that Spotify nor Pandora can compete with. When you link the app up to your facebook profile, it will automatically recommend a few tracks to listen to based on who you like, but this functionality could be improved significantly.
3.) Youtube
Artists and labels are focusing more on Youtube to promote their music because of its monetization methods and larger audience. Youtube alone accounts for 7% of all music discovery while teens use it 64% of the time. There are a lot of great channels uploading new tracks each day that you can explore and find on your own. Pictured is the little known Youtube Disco where you can enter an artist and it will automatically make a playlist for you.
4.) Twitter Music
Even though the launch was sort of a flop, Twitter Music is both visually and asethetically pleasing. It’s easy to navigate to the different genres and you’re able to see the album art for everything at once. In order to listen to full tracks you have to either sign into your Rdio or Spotify account though which kind of defeats the point, but having the option to browse with so many different options is nice.
5.) Soundowl
A ton of blogs use Soundowl instead of Soundcloud to upload tunes to stream to their websites. What I like to do is follow a few of the best accounts and just check them every once and a while to see what they upload. I’ll usually download a nice mix of indie, hip-hop and EDM tracks that will keep me / my iPod occupied for the next few days. Find that you’re not able to listen to everything you download? Set your iPhone to sync to recently added only.
6.) Turntable.fm
While the once over-hyped site has lost a lot of its former prominence, the core user base remains and there are a lot of great rooms that you can jump into and count on solid track selection. When you’re in a Turntable.fm room and a track hits your ear that you haven’t heard before, it’s a quick jump into your browser to find a download.
7) 8tracks
Humans will always beat the robots and their algorithms when it comes to music selection. There’s nothing that can tell a formula that my indietronic mix should include Two Door Cinema Club into T.E.E.D into The Chainsmokers remix. Pandora does a great job of putting together Avicii style mainstage sets and other familiar tunes, but fails at actually playing anything provoking. 8tracks are custom mixtapes made by its userbase. Currently playing this by djacrylick.
8.) Soundcloud
Yes, Soundcloud is the number one place to be for dance music fans, but you’re probably not using it this way. Find an underground artist and start stalking the people that they follow, then stalk the people they follow and so on and so on. For new artists that I haven’t heard of before, I’ll look at their top plays and listen for a few minutes before moving on. Sometimes you’ll end up traveling down the rabbit hole and before you know it, you’re listening to disco-house from an Arabian 14-year-old.
9.) Soundrop.fm
Sounddrop is like the reddit for Spotify. In the different chart areas (subreddits) users can upvote or downvote tracks based on their popularity. It’s a simple, but very popular premise. Typically when someone listens to a song they can quickly decide whether the they like it or not. Soundrop is looking to capitalize on that, but will probably need to add some sort of a gamification to it in order to reach a larger audience.
