DJs today are bigger than rock stars. They’re marrying couples in Las Vegas and now getting knighted by presidents of places that few have heard of.
Dirty Dutch boss, DJ Chuckie was recently knighted by Dési Bouterse, the 8th President of Suriname, Chuckie’s hometown. According to Wikipedia, Bouterse was also the former dictator of Suriname and has a quite controversial past.
Transgressions aside, Chuckie performed at the Carribean Festival of Arts in the capital, Parmaribo before being named Commander of the Order of the Yellow Star. Boutsere cited Chuckie’s accomplishments in music and acknowledged that he should serve as a role model for the youth of Suriname.
Chuckie is definitely a role model who is using his fame for the benefit a lot more people than just himself. He recently launched the Play Foundation, a youth development program in Aruba that’s designed to provide local schools with solar power and encourage projects in the areas of music and creative arts. The foundation will make its debut this year at Electric Festival Aruba, the first of its kind to take place in the Caribbean.
Somehow all good deeds aside, I doubt anyone will start calling him “Sir Clyde Narain”.
Humble brag:
I can now say that I took patron shots with a knight of Suriname. Can you!?
