DJ Sasha is revered for his refined musical palette, as well as his ability to blend difficult genres of music together. This past Friday at the Dallas, Texas club It’ll Do (courtesy of Disco Donnie Presents), he played an impressive deep house set that was reminiscent of his older shows. To no surprise, Sasha exhibited his mastery of the decks to a packed venue, and luckily, the crowd seemed to be familiar with his music.
Sasha began pioneering his signature sound in the 1980’s with a strong influence in Acid House. He is infamous for teaming up with fellow DJ, John Digweed, in the 1990’s and performing massive tours and projects together. They are both well respected for their legendary party mixes and compilations, often incorporating a fascinating mixture of progressive house, tech-house, techno, and elements of trance. Additionally, Sasha did not deviate from the fundamental components that make him such a sophisticated sound engineer this past weekend. For his long awaited performance, he played a very intimate collection of tunes with smooth, progressive builds and consistent beats.
Each song was a haunting tale of beautiful piano melodies, deep illustrative waves of vibration, and sharp, almost slightly off-key noises. The composition was remarkably eloquent, and the delivery was a rich harmony of polished transitions. Fans would easily get lost in the fluidity of his beats, and then escorted out of the hypnotic daze with heavy bass and dark trance chords. The deep house snares and boisterous house claps sent a tingle to my ears as the timing progressed from techno to break beats. If there’s something I have to commend him for, it’s the fact that he was definitely live mixing the entire time. He took a few moments out of each movement to peek at the crowded audience he was playing to, but the majority of his time was spent completely focused on his work. In a world where the craft of DJing is rapidly changing and becoming muddled, Sasha remains true to his music, and true to his art.
