In just a few weeks, the 4th annual EDMbiz Conference & Expo will be taking over the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas from June 16th to June 18th. Since its inception in 2013, the Insomniac-hosted conference has brought together some of the music industry’s brightest and best executives with top artists, managers, agents, and even casual dance music fans for three days of insightful and progressive panels and keynote sessions aimed at furthering the positive impact that dance music has on society, as well as serving as a gathering of the dance music ecosystem to discuss specific business practices.
EDMbiz 2015 kicks off on June 16th with Afrojack at the brand new Omnia Nightclub, which not only signals the start of the conference, but is also the official start of EDC Week in Las Vegas. While the majority of the conference is spent at the plethora of panels and keynote sessions planned, like any Insomniac event, night times are spent at any number of Insomniac’s club events, including sets by Duke Dumont, Avicii, Krewella, and more, until the culmination of the conference on June 18th and the start of EDC Las Vegas.
With EDMbiz 2015 on the horizon, Insomniac has released their phase 1 programming for the conference, an impressive slate of guest speakers and panelists that include Pasquale Rotella, CEO of Insomniac, Blaise DeAngelo, OWSLA’s label manager, and Paul Morris, President and CEO of AM Only.
With so much going on during EDC Week and EDMbiz, White Raver Rafting has put together our list of Can’t Miss EDMbiz 2015 Panels and Speakers. Badges to EDMbiz 2015 are still available for purchase, and you can register for one here.
1. Radioactive: Listening Trends in a Changing Media Landscape
Dance music has experienced a remarkable growth into mainstream music within the last five years, and as big time record labels, like Sony and Universal Music Group, and Hollywood embrace dance music and its culture, EDM may be reaching a crossroads. Platforms like Soundcloud may soon become obsolete as Sony continues to pull its artists’ catalogs off of the online streaming service, forcing emerging artists to look to different platforms like Spotify and Twitch with the hope of finding more success. This panel should shed some valuable insight on what the future of music streaming and online file hosting will be.
2. Krewella
The duo of Jahan and Yasmine Yousef have a unique perspective on the music industry right now, as the Chicago natives are embroiled in a heated legal battle with their former member and producer, Kris Trindl. Trindl sued the Yousef sisters for kicking him out of Krewella, and Yasmine and Jahan responded with a countersuit, claiming that Trindl left the group on his own accord.
Regardless of how the lawsuit plays out, Krewella has a rare point of view on this topic, as a number of major artists have weighed in with their thoughts on the issue. Krewella will be speaking on the fourth annual Artist Panel at this year’s EDMbiz.
3. Keynote Session with James Barton, President of Electronic Music at Live Nation
James Barton is one of dance music’s most powerful executives, as he oversees the entire electronic music division at Live Nation on a global scale. Barton began his career in the music industry by founding the weekly UK club night, Cream, which served as a launch pad for the careers of dance music legends such as Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, and the Chemical Brothers. He went on to evolve Cream and turn it into a globally recognized club brand with its own dance imprint, as well as a brand that is recognized at countless festivals, including the iconic Creamfields in the UK.
In 2012, Live Nation bought Barton’s company, Cream Holdings, and Live Nation CEO, Michael Rapino, enlisted Barton to help turn dance music into a global business, a task that he has undoubtedly accomplished. With a vast knowledge of the music industry and an impressive resume to match, James Barton will share his thoughts and insights during this keynote session, and it’s one you don’t want to miss.
4. Billboard Presents: Dance Power Players 2015
In a panel hosted by Billboard President, John Amato, Billboard Dance Editor, Matt Medved, and writer Megan Buerger, Billboard is presenting their complete list of dance power players of 2015. Last year, the Billboard EDM Power Players list included Pasquale Rotella, as well as shared thoughts on what the top 20 DJs in the world were paid, as well as Electric Daisy Carnival’s move from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.
This year, for the first time ever, executives will be considered on Billboard’s Dance Power Players 2015, and during this panel, Amato, Buerger, and Medved will share how this year’s list of power players were selected.
