With an intense amount of eclecticism, Downlow’d has gradually accumulated followers, tracks, and all-around growth. “Buried” is his latest endeavor in a long slew of releases from every corner of the house music genre.
Downlow’d has been blasting out some seriously aggressive productions since 2011. Bouncing between El Paso and New York City, he’s always kept an open ear, no matter the location, which is why his SoundCloud is full of music that showcases a plethora of genres, all expressed with an original spark that can be felt within each single.
Before “Buried,” standout tracks that received positive reception were, and still are the Downlow’d remix of “Take Ü There”, by Jack Ü ft. Kiesza, an atmospheric bass house track that’s exceptionally simple and smooth, but easy to sink into the steady feeling of the rhythm. Another is “Systems Corrupted”, an original track released on his own label, Macro Records, that charted in the Beatport Top 20. It’s a dark, imaginative take on Main Room Bounce that boasts just how much of the vast EDM spectrum Downlow’d plays with.
The future is bright for Downlow’d, with a thick catalog of catchy tracks under his belt and forthcoming club and festival dates in the foreseeable future, Downlow’d is an exceptional and unique act to keep tabs on 2015. Given his peculiar nature, WRR and Downlow’d had to catch up via an interview. Check it out as we’ll talk what the rest of 2015 holds, what drives Downlow’d, and the future of electronic dance music.
Interview
It’s obvious you don’t limit yourself to one genre, where does the drive to diversify come from?
My drive has always been to make music that’s personal to me – I don’t feel like artists should limit themselves. Music is amazing; it’s something I absolutely couldn’t live without. I feel like the tracks I make are relative to what I’m feeling when I’m writing. I always like to keep what’s relevant in mind, but these days, making music (to me) is more of a sporadic thing.
How do you decide what type of track theme/genre you’re going to pursue next?
I’m inspired by weird things – typically relevant to pop culture. If any of you listen to my podcast, ‘The Macrocast’, you probably know that I’m a pretty huge nerd. The process for me differs, though. I usually think up new ideas in the shower or while I’m working out then put them on paper for a later date. Sometimes I’ll get ideas for hooks while I’m reading comics or watching a TV show. I haven’t yet decided what kind of track I’m going to make next, but I suppose that’s kind of the fun of it.
What are some of the most important/impacting changes you’ve seen happen in the EDM scene in the last couple of years?
EDM is becoming more widely accessible to everyone, and I think that’s amazing. I used to get a lot of hate for listening to dance music when I was in high school, now I see some of the people that used to rag on it talking about going to Ultra or EDC or Sun City Music Festival (in my home town), so I’m really glad they saw the light. EDM is more relevant than ever and we’ve started to see that crossover in the pop and hip-hop communities, and that’s something that’s been years in the making and we all get to see it happen. I’m pretty honored to be a part of this scene right now.
“Buried” is super powerful future house track, what sparked the idea for “Buried”?
I tend to leave the track up to interpretation for the listeners, but I guess what I was thinking about was relationships – not being able to be with the person you want to be with. To some, this might be feeling a distance in the relationship you’re currently in – an ocean between you and your significant other that you’re slowly drowning in. Overcoming heartache, and digging yourself out of that (metaphoric) grave.
How do you feel about future house and where do you think the genre is heading?
I think Future House is amazing It’s a sub genre that really advocates creativity, so I dig that. I’m totally astounded by all of these amazing producers. I feel like it’s heading to some awesome places. I hope to explore them and other ones too!
Do you have a favorite genre to remix?
I don’t have any favorite genres, but I definitely prefer to remix strong vocal records.
Any EPs or collaborations coming out this year? Any tour stops?
I’ve got a collaboration with my buddies in Our Time from Oklahoma City that’s dropping this week in partnership with Robot Dance Records and a remix of Kastra that’s dropping on my label, Macro Records, later this year with another humungous remix from Aylen. Additionally, I’ve got a few other original goodies in the works for all the computerheads out there (you’ll have to stay posted for)!
As far as tour dates, I’m excited to be playing MUDDFEST in El Paso on July 11th with some other really amazing acts. I’ve got some selected national dates in the works after that, then I’ll be gearing up to head out for an east coast tour in September-October! You can stay posted with all of the latest information about this and other stuff related to my music via my Twitter or my Facebook page.
