Insomniac’s newest trance venture made its way to the city that never sleeps this past weekend. Taking over the Brooklyn hangar for two days, Dreamstate featured some of the best trance acts in the industry. Starting on August 27th and ending Sunday the 28th, Dreamstate brought out trance fans all throughout NYC. Trance lovers rallied for this monumental performance by some our favorite trance artists including Markus Schulz, Vini Vici, Infected Mushroom, and John O’Callaghan.
Brooklyn hangar would prove to be the perfect venue for this event, having a large space that comfortably fit all attendees. Equipped with full bars on each side and a large bar outside, Brooklyn hangar went above and beyond to host Dreamstate. Just last year Brooklyn Hangar also hosted Anjunabeats’ tour for a performance that brought acts like Seven Lions, Andrew Bayer, and Ilan Bluestone. Thankfully, Dreamstate took place in August when the temperature is high enough to chill outside and relax.
Day one of Dreamstate would kick off around 9 PM and featured more progressive, upbeat trance artists. Artists Nifra, Standerwick, and John Askew would rain down trance before Markus Schulz took the decks at 12:00 AM. Schulz army came out in force as Markus Schulz flags and shirts could be spotted all throughout the front row. During his performance, Markus Schulz brought out special vocalists that performed their tracks off his newest album “Watch The World”. Four vocalists with extraordinary voices would take the stage throughout his two hour set. Dropping a bevy of Schulz classics as well as tracks off his album, Markus Schulz went beyond the expectations with his set. The crowd responded to Schulz’s progressive trance with immense energy.
John O’Callaghan would arrive on the decks fresh off of Schulz’s performance. A favorite of Aly & Fila’s FSOE label, O’Callaghan would throw down a set mixed with progressive and psytrance. Adding some diversity into the night, O’Callaghan would stun the crowd with his performance. Matched with a spectacle of lasers and lights, Brooklyn hangar was bumping all throughout the night. With a seemingly futuristic feel to it, Dreamstate captivated the crowd with their immense productions and unique stage design. Astrix’s would then go on to close out the first night of Dreamstate wrapping up right around 4:00 AM.
The vibes of Dreamstate can be described as anything you would expect from a trance festival. All around you could see ear to ear smiles and just generally happy people. Trance brings out the best in people with its euphoric and uplifting sounds. Striking up conversation with attendees would often result in a lengthy conversation about the artists performing and trance music in general. It’s always a delight to talk with someone you don’t know and have it progress into a fantastic conversation about electronic music. I’ve always felt that trance vibes were better than most vibes and Dreamstate held true to that feeling. New Yorkers came out with love and passion to welcome the first ever Dreamstate NYC.
The second day of Dreamstate would rapidly switch gears from the first day, at least music wise. Unlike day one, day two would lean much more towards psytrance as opposed to progressive/uplifting trance. Some of the acts performing on day two included Freedom Fighters, Vini Vici, John 00 Fleming, Infected Mushroom, and Purenrg. Each artist would throw down their respective sound with the majority leaning towards hard psytrance that quickly got the crowd moving. Freedom Fighters would end with their remix of Simon Patterson’s “Dissolve” that brought up anticipation for the next artist, Vini Vici. The Israeli based duo were undoubtedly the best performance of all Dreamstate. They’ve been rising through the scene with their psytrance originals and remixes. Known for the hit single “The Tribe”, Vini Vici destroyed Brooklyn Hangar with their beats.
Dreamstate’s debut NYC performance was undoubtedly a huge success. Whether it was diversity in the music or the insane productions, Dreamstate went to extreme lengths to ensure the satisfaction of fans. Dreamstate will be hosting performances all across the world and we can only hope they come back to NYC soon. Until next time Dreamstate!
