London’s Tobacco Dock became a dark and dirty techno dungeon last weekend and we can’t stop reliving it; it’s safe to say, we’re definitely ready for next year’s Drumcode Halloween. As a veteran in the industry, any electronic music fan knows that Adam Beyer can put on a show and if anyone wasn’t aware of that, Saturday’s events provided the evidence. With three very different stage arenas to choose from, it’s easy to get lost in amongst the sharp kicks and heavy beats as well as the creative, horrifying and odd Halloween costumes, but some of us left Alan Fitzpatrick’s car park finale with tears in our eyes in a purely cathartic manner.
With any all day event, it’s difficult to know when to arrive if the lineup is not posted online beforehand. LWE provided attendees with a teaser the day before and we learnt when Amelie Lens and Maya Jane Coles would be performing, so many aimed for an entry time of around 3pm. The venue is known for hosting the biggest events so we knew we were in for a treat, rather than a trick, this Halloween and we were welcomed with a beautiful and ornate sculpture where many were already relaxing and seeking refuge from the stages.
Being quite easy to navigate, it was very easy to slip from Reset Robot in the Main Room to Pig&Dan in the Car Park to Nick Hoppner in The Gallery. However, in our opinion, the Car Park was where it was at and where we decided to start our day. With a separate bar and space to dance away from the crowd, the decision to have a stage in this space was a very good idea because of the freedom it provided in comparison to the squashed and hot nature of the Main Room and The Gallery.
Our highlights of Drumcode Halloween included starting off with Enrico Sangiuliano that gave attendees a taster of what to expect and got the party started. We stuck around in the Car Park for Amelie Lens – our first time seeing her in the UK – and her well-renowned energy seeped into the crowd and it went wild. Special guest Maya Jane Coles, as always, brought it hard and played some of her classics, as well as some of her new tracks that have shot her into the limelight this year.
Illario Alicante and Sam Paganini are DJs that have existed in the techno realm for a long time, but for us, haven’t really become Drumcode favourites, however, they were perfect precursors to Adam Beyer and we are looking forward to hearing more from them soon. Adam Beyer was the obvious and clear favourite, but for us, ending Drumcode Halloween with Alan Fitzpatrick in the Car Park was an amazing and one-of-a-kind experience.
We will be repeat attendees of Drumcode Halloween for sure, but we are also looking forward to Adam Beyer’s extended set at Fabric just before the New Year and other events at Tobacco Dock in 2018 like Hot Since 82 and Junction 2.
