This year on the 4th of July, Modestep was featured on Mistajam’s Daily Dose of Dubstep on BBC Radio 1xtra. Their set opened with the strongest 10 minutes of dub that I’ve heard from any set all summer, and included 501‘s absolutely monstrous remix of Drumsound and Bassline Smith’s track “Through The Night.” No, this song is not brand new, but I’d never heard the original and before this week I’d never heard this stunning remix. Not only does this song have massive drops, sick vocals, and excellent production – it’s a perfect representation of what I consider to be “good dubstep.”
We constantly hear people trying to define what makes “good” versus “bad” dubstep. In the end, it really just depends on what you like. Recently, I heard the word “Skrillexization” used to describe dubstep that gratuitously uses womps, wobbles, and drops in the style that Skrillex made famous. This song is definitely not “Skrillexized dubstep,” but still has strong appeal because it smoothly uses all of the best elements of a fun summer dubstep track. Ready for a heinous cliche? This track is a banger. Listen, and then check out 501’s original track ‘Black and Blue‘, which uses more traditional elements of grimier dubstep, but in a smooth sexy way that will make you want to dance and get weird.
